I've seen the local taxation system go from bad to worse - Poll Tax was the biggest mistake the Tories ever made and whilst Council Tax started out as a decent enough replacement, it's now right up there with it.

The concept was fine - a charge based on the value of the property with reductions available for sole occupancy etc. and it was well received by the majority as in most cases it was considerably cheaper than the outgoing Poll Tax.

The problems came when the Councils overspent and the government capped their budgets - the only way they were going to raise the money they 'needed' was to stitch up the Council Tax payers with massive hikes so the councillors could still swan off on jollies.

Councils are all plagued with an inability to effectively collect the money due to them and as a result they fall further into the red and screw us even more.

I've lived through all these changes on both sides of the fence as I spent 3 years working for our local council collecting Poll Tax/Council Tax and Business Rates arrears beore I got a real job.

Income tax is fair enough, it's just annoying how many super rich people avoid it grrrrrrrrrr. Yes, I pay it though I'm still in the middle band thank god, the thought of giving up 40% of my hard earned dosh to scummy layabouts is not a nice one. VAT is fair enough as well, except I don't see why they charge it on womans sanitary products - not exactly a luxury that one is it? As for council tax, well let me tell you the tale of South Staffs, a rural area where services are spread out over a wide area, who pay a grand total of zero council tax (well they did for many years, if they do now it's a small amount) because they balance the budget the government gives them. And they have superior services to anywhere else I've ever lived. If council members got off their backsides and worked out their budgets properly they wouldn't have this problem. It would also be made a lot easier if they would chase up people who didn't pay it grrrr

Exactly - it's not proportional or distributed fairly or evenly to where it's needed.

As for women's sanitary products, well write to Mr. Howard and maybe they put "Removing VAT on female sanitary products" in their election manifesto to get the female population on-side!

I have already used http://www.faxyourmp.com to make my views clear on several points, including the VAT on sanpro (this has since been dropped to 5%, the lowest allowable rate of VAT under EU rules). Tis a good site that one :)

If you take your annual gross income and take off it every single tax you pay, income, vat, fuel, insurance, air, council, the list goes on, in real terms, how much of that gross figure is actually yours?

Too right, very little Im afraid is yours. The biggest increase this year on our council tax was for the police, and guess what; theyve only recently downgraded our station and reduced the number of local police... what the hells that about?:([V]

pisses me off that I get taxed on overtime. surely the idea of overtime is to help you get a little extra cash to PAY the f**king bills, not mean you work extra hours just for the taxman
