The DS of 1956 was engineered to have a strong central section with sacrificial ends. It was intended to have an air cooled flat six in front, hence the long nose, the idea being that passengers could duck into the empty space in the strongly boxed footwell should a crash become imminent.
Citroen could only manage to develop the flat twin for the 2cv and there was no cash left for a new engine, so the DS used the old engine from the 1934 Traction Avant, and this was set behind the front axle line and consequently used up all the interior space that was intended for passengers.
It wasn't a true safety cell, but it was the beginning.
