immobiliser problems i think?

hi, im wanting to get a scudo 2.0jtd,51 plate, its a non runner due to the immobilser or so the guy says! i sort of know him so i dont think he will rip me off, but im worried having read about immobilisers it could also be the ecu! the car just wont start, is there any way i can check myself or even check other things ? he only thinks its the immobiliser because the same sort of thing happened to another vehical of his! thanks in advance paul
