Hi, I am new to this, just joined.

I have got a Ulysse 2.0s 1996, now has 85,500miles on it. I have had it for almost a year now. It's been ok, only had to pay out for a new starter motor.[ MOT this month.
Anyway, I'm intrested in the keybad immobilser. It works ok, but the option to turn it off ie. press and hold the "D/N" button does not turn of the code operation. I have read the posts on disconnecting the keypad. Could I have some more detail, like:
1. How do I get to the back of the keypad?
2. Is it just one cable going into the back of the unit?
3. When it is disconnected ( engine needs to be running) is that it. Will it need to be re-connected at any point, eg. if the battery was disconectted for any reason.

Anyone out their is able to assist that would be great.

On another issue:
The key fob has never worked. The LED on the fob lights when pressed. I am assuming that it needs to be re-programmed.
Is this a Fiat job only, or is their another cheaper way to get the fob working?

Looking forward to replies, great forum.

ok remove the screws holding the keypad in and with the engine running thats running very important pull the connector from the rear if i remember there all black and in one strip the unit is now disconected ,there is a little cubby hole you can get from fiat that fits in the hole where the unit was i paid £10 for mine about 4 years ago .the reason a lot of people disconect it is with opening and closing it causes the wires to brake causing a visit to fiat and ££££££££££££££££££ (y)

Thanks for this info.
Once the unit is disconnected, do you know what happens if the battery was disconnected for any reason. Like would the unit have to be re-connected again for that first start after battery was re-connected.
Any more info. would be appreciated, thanks.

nope once disconected thats it ,you can leave it in place wires disconected or get a replacment cubby hole and stick the keypad in the cupboard thats where mine lives (y)

I know someone who didn't have engine running :shakehead
thankfully not:worship: . ive a mate that works for fiat and he told me about 100 times engine running if not it will cost you £££££££££££££ so one more time ENGINE RUNNING (y) :D

Ours had fractured cables but I just replaced all the wires with new ones. Lasted the rest of the cars life.

Our immobiliser keypad has never caused any problems (except when one of the garage staff broke it off with his knee :shakehead) until yesterday. The car (1996 TD EL) was in the garage with worn track rod ends and I got the phone call to say that the work was done but they couldn't start the car - "had I had any immobiliser problems?".
When they entered the code, the green LED came on but the red LED also stayed on.
I assumed it was probably a broken wire, but the problem was solved by clearing a fault code through the diagnostic tools. I am guessing that either someone tried to start the car too many times without the code, or someone put in an incorrect code too many times or the fault code was set due to a glitch as the battery was disconnected / reconnected.
So immobiliser problems are not always due to damaged wires.

1996 Ulysse has run like a dream since I got it 8 years ago. But recently started having problems with the keypad. ie both lights coming on when I turned the ignition key. Managed to get it started a few times but with no confidence that it would not cause me problems when trying to get back from my destination. Found this forum last night and found that I could disconnect the keypad making sure the engine was running. Managed to get it started this morning and I removed the keypad. Tried it a few times after and it was ok. Then nothing. Engine turning over but not starting. I have disconnected the battery and replaced the unit but I am still getting both lights on. Is it a hopeless case?

Lanciak69 - thanks for this info, i was wondering how to ditch the keypad. It's the only thing that I don't like about the car so far (mind you, only had it a week! plenty time for grief yet!) note to self: engine running....
