I present this guide for an easy and cheap fix of faulty electrical commutator inside ignition switch.
I had it needing replacement. I posted about it in this thread: https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/b...other-electrical-gremlins.522794/post-4880909.
The problem with it is the fact that Fiat doesn't list component parts of ignition switch for Punto and when I asked about it, I was offered by local Fiat dealer a complete entire switch with new keys for the price of 332.60 pounds plus VAT. But I managed to find the exact compatible commutator at the price of 3.44 pounds (VAT included) and replaced it, so having it fixed.
This is on my left hand drive Punto, RHD would be slightly different but mainly the same. And I imagine this problem might go across some other Fiat models, with Fiat not listing the commutator part number for it. If so, I say compatible electrical commutator can be found thus having a simpler and more cheap fix.
Ignition switch on mine is Fiat code 46753084, phisical switch is TRW SIPEA B365 having these codes on it 0.5521 0.8712 plus Locker 3492 and Commutator 5630. Commutator has 7 pins, car having 2 plugs connected to it, one with 3 wires, one with 4 wires.
I bought the MTR 13310950 Commutator and found antother one exactly the same, NTY EKS-FT-002. They are exactly the same design as mine, in every detail and it works perfect. It is listed as compatible for Ducato, probably not listed for Punto too just because Fiat doesn't give the code for Punto commutator.
Replacement steps:
Take off cabin fusebox cover
Take off steering column cover
Take off the two flat screwdriver head screws holding the ignition switch in position
Disconnect the electrical plugs and the antenna ring little plug and the clip holding its cable
Press in the 2 clips holding the commutator in place
Commutator will come out probably with locker plate too. Take off the locker plate and place it back inside ignition switch in correct position
Have the new commutator on paying attention to the white plate. It needs to match position to fit in over the locker plate. Rotate the white plate in correct position and press the commutator in until it clicks. If it doesn't go in easy, don't force it, it's because plates are not aligned in correct position. Reposition the white plate and fit the commutator in until it goes in easy and clicks.
There it is. Ignition switch is fix. Test it by putting in the key and switch the key on. Test if it is working by connecting the plugs, antenna plug too and start the engine.
Put everything back in reverse order.
