ignition off stereo power problem

first off, i just fitted my new headunit WOO i rock and stuff...

now i know there's a million threads on this, but my question is a bit more embarrasing than the usual 'which wire is my remote?' one...

one of the iso connectors has 4 extra wires going into it, not used by the headunit.

the one that is wired to the headunits remote bit is a black and red one. the others are grey, purple, and um, some other colour, i forgot

first off, which one is my remote wire secondly, would it do any harm to connect the wrong one? i mean it's 12v in supposedly, so connecting the wrong one shouldn't do any harm right? trial and error should be ok?

right the real question. the embarrassing one:

How the hell do you remove the pins from the iso connector?

i've tried poking and pulling and and and.... grrr

fair do's it was pitch black outside, and i may have missed something obvious, but this is doing my head in. i've assembled loads of computers in my time. i'm not a stranger to removing the atx/molex pins of a power supply. shouldn't the iso connector dismatle in much the same way?

i've given up for tonight, and i'm guessing so long as i turn the stereo off before locking the car it's no biggie, it's just annoying that i can't do it!


edit: as a sidenote, it's a bloody good headunit (the new mutant one) for the money (£70), and i can run stuff through aux no problems, which means i'm a step closer to my car pc

right first of all what car is it for? also are you talking about the remote wire for an amp? and finally you have no chance of removing pins from a ISO connecter, it will be moulded around them.

it's mark one punto (60sx, in my sig).

fiat seem to have done something a bit backwards when it comes to the iso connector, and wired it up a bit wrong. loads of people have the same problem

from my manual:

B 1 3 5 7     Connector B: speakers (rr+/-, fr+/-, fl+/-, rl+/-)
  2 4 5 6

A     5 [COLOR="Red"][b]7[/b][/COLOR]     Connector A: 4 = memory +12v
    4   8                  5 = antenna
                           [COLOR="Red"][b]7 = +12v ignition[/b][/COLOR]
                           8 = ground

i was knackered last night, so i'm not too sure if my post made much sense

i'm not after the 'remote' wire for an amp sorry. should have made it clearer. i just want the stereo to power off when the ignition is off.

the speakers are all wired up correctly. so connector B is spot on.

the memory holds (eg tuned radio stations etc) so i reckon A4 is ok.

i haven't got an extending automatic antenna, so pin A5 is left empty, which is ok.

now the stereo powers on just fine. so there must be 12v on the A7 pin, and A8 myst be grounded.

the problem is that the stereo STAYS on, even without the keys in the ignition. seems A7 is connected directly to 12v, NOT to 12v routed through the ignition system.

I have 3 extra wires going into iso connector A that aren't used by the headunit. red+black, purple, and i think grey. these aren't doing any harm, as the headunit simply doesn't have pins there, so they're not making any contact.

Would one of these three 'extra' wires likely be the '12v provided key is in ignition' supply? How can i find out which one it is? If you can't remove the pins from the iso connector, how can i remove the constant 12v wire from A7 and put the '12v if ignition is on' wire in it's place?

Is it a timed off? I mean have you left it running a bit to see if it switches off, if I recall my Punto one correctly it runs without the ignition on and then switches off after a time I will find my manual and have a look see.

i was sat playing with the unit for about an hour without the key in the ignition last night steve, so i doubt it

the eject button light was still on this morning too. not to worry as it's not using much power, but i'm fairly sure that should turn off, and only the blinking red led should stay on?

like i said before, it's not the end of the world if i can't fix it, it's just bloody annoying! worried i might drain the battery at some point as i could potentially leave the stereo on. don't know how though lol! bit noisy, and i have to turn it off to remove the faceplate at any rate! knowing me, i'd manage it though

you know what guys, i think i might just leave it.

this thread seems to suggest that since it's a faceoff headunit i really shouldnt worry about the whole ignition/power thing.

it shouldn't drain the battery in the 'standby' mode, and it could be quite handy being able to leave the stereo on for a short while eg if i need to pop into the garage and my girlfriend is waiting in the car.

sorry for wasting your time, i think i'll just congratulate myself on a nice successful install

I gave up in the end - it was just too much tinkering with the connector block and finding a switched power supply buried behind the dash, e.g the ciggy lighter.

I just remove the HU's security panel before I leave the car.

i don't really want to break anything

honestly though, i think i prefer being able to leave the radio on when i take the keys out, much nicer for the girlfriend when i pop in to pay for petrol etc

thanks for the heads up though, did look at your guide previously, but splicing from the windows meant i might break two things, and that would suck some pretty major balls!

My father's side of the family is from the Tawe Valley. The in-laws are from Ynys Môn. Sadly the old man married a foreigner and emigrated to the east bank of the Afon Dyfrwdy where I've spent most of my life yearning for my roots.

I thought the window switches on a MkI were a) on the door and b) not live when the igintion was swtiched off.
On a MkII they are on the central dash, and will only close the windows when the igniton is off.

that is correct. they'd do the job nicely, but i don't want to mess with my windows to get the headunit behaving 'correctly'. guess being a developer means that encapsulation spreads to all parts of your life! anyway, it's a non issue now, i like being able to fiddle with it with the ignition off




i'll report back when i end up with a drained battery lol
