Technical Idea Mjet maximum temp alert

I need a little help.

on cold starting my 1.3 mjet has been posting a message of 'Maximum temperature warning' with the temp gauge flying up to the top then falling back to the bottom.
for a couple of seconds the car will run like a bag of nails then all is well.
nothing has been posted to the error log either so am at a loss to explain it.
the battery is in good order and never has an issue with starting slowly.

any clues?
