I think i have a big problemo

Hi guys
When i change gear from 1st to 2nd there is i loud crunching noise clutch is fine and it doesnt do it in any other gear change only 1st to 2nd. Any1 no the problem or had the problem?

Damaged syncromesh perhaps, this is part of the gearbox that makes engaging the actual gear smoother.

Does it happen on every gear change or say on average of every three or four? If this is the case it may be that the syncromesh is not completely gone but has a burr on it which a garage may be able to dress with a file to improve things (won't be perfect but better), cost about £160 - 180 as it is obviously a gearbox out job.

If the syncromesh is completely gone it will cost between £10 and £30 for the part and then as above plus maybe a little bit more depending on how much dismantling is required.

Things to try in the meantime are changing the gearbox oil for a better quality oil, this is cheaper than having the garage do some dismantling to identify the problem.

I will change the gearbox oil then and c if it works a little and yes it does it intermitently. Cheers for the advice.
