I.T. advice needed.

Two of our sons are wanting to start up their own servers on their pc's (we have 3 pc's at the mo) and i'm just wondering what it means and if it will leave us open to hacking and other probs for the other pc's.

Kev and I have NO I.T. knowledge at all so would welcome any and all help you can give us.

Ah, no worries - I used to run a games server on my PC - although it can eat bandwidth, lol, plus affect others who want to surf on the network [not sure what broadband you have].

It usually involves just opening up the relevant ports on the router, and forwarding them accordingly to whatever PC is being used - what games they got in mind?

what games? on the netowkr or for all net users to use? and whats your net connection speed?

one thing to watch is some ISPs will get quite bitchy about you using your internet connection for a game server..

Good point - although I never had any issues with Plus.Net - the AA server I ran was on virtually 24/7.

Having a static IP address helps as well.

We are on bulldog 8meg and we run 3 pc's and 1 wireless laptop at the mo, although we are looking to expand to 3 more pc's once the attic is done.

Kev is wondering though whether to get the boys laptops for better safety (he thinks if someone hacks the wireless conections then they wont get access to the main wired ones ).

The game they play is moparscape, if that helps.

Makes no difference, all you are doing is forwarding certain ports on the router to whatever machine is running the server - risk of hacking is minimal, because you should only be opening up relevant gaming ports.

Never heard of moparscape - will have a look though...

if someone does again access they have access so youve gotta keep up security, getting on the wireless is the same as the wired just with out wires lol. so no point ><

im on the wireless and i have acess to only shared documents on my other pcs and nothing else ive also got a bui8lt in firewall on my router which does help

stu - looks exactly like runescape kinda thing a kinda mod, you have your own server and 99 lvl for each possible thing which is max, but your still what youwould be when you start of on ruenscape, doesnt look to excitign

and ive justran my own server easdily enough, you just click start server

TBH BBS that is what we have been saying but as the kids know more about pc's than we do i was looking for some advice as to whether it was safe to allow them to do it seeing as all their mates use this server thingy.

DOT, if they are asking your permission for something like this its not really so bad, no harm can come from running a game server, its the things they do on the computer that they dont tell you about that you need to worry about!
