Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a used Ducato, what should I look out for and what's the best one to buy? 1.9? 2.4? 2.8? etc

thanks

2.8 JTD on the 244 series (2002-2006) comes highly recommended.

Nice drive, gutsy engine and car like handling make it a good piece of equipment, particularly as a panel van.

The hard ride and springs can cause a bit of expense to certain parts though. We have need strut bearing pads at the top and wheel bearings, but we have done 143,000 miles!!

Mpg, 22 mpg driven hard, 32 easily achievable in mixed use, 25% urban 75% motorway/cruising in our experience.

Good vans
I have the 97, 1.9td, and it's very underpowered on a motorhome.
Costs nothing to run though, apart from diesel, about 22mpg.
Watch out for the immobilisers, make sure you get all the keys, including the masterkey were it came with one.
Change the oil reguarly as well.

All depends what you want it for!!

I had a '97 2.5 non turbo medium wheel base high roof, fantastic around town, handled like a car, could throw it around roundabouts and in and out of parking places. Slow for motorways, would struggle up a long incline, losing speed all the way. Overtaking had to be planned well in advance. And that was empty!!

Now I run a '01 2.8jtd maxi. Tonnes of power, overtakes no problem, foot down and away you go, can accelerate up the same inclines the 2.5 struggled with. At 4.30am with no load and a clear motorway have seen just under 100mph. But doesn't handle as well as the mwb the extra 60cm lengh makes a big difference.

Avoid the 2.8 non turbo, eats gearboxes and very difficult to find a replacement as is specific to that engine.

For fun, I'd go for a short low roof with a 2.8 turbo and start racing young lads in pimped micras!!

Keep well,
Torq
