I have had no luck in finding a cheap enuff gearbox for my 1600 16v petrol multipla and was hoping somebody wud know where i can get one from cheap enuff.Cheers:)

one of my mates mates has a Multi in at his scrapyard (very rare round here to have on in the scrappers) ,i am off for a looksee tomorrow as i need a few bits and bobs, i will let you know if its a petrol with a good box. Think its on a V but not too sure, i have left instructions its not to be touched til i get there :D.

Thanks for this message it has given me some slight hope lol get in ouch when you find out pls cos the quotes im gettin atm are ridiculous

Ask the seller for the box......i know he is a mate of a mate and should be very reasonable .
You could say you know one of the guys off the alfa155.org forum ;).

good luck getting your gearbox sorted. I have given up on mine. Cost way to much to get mine done compared to replacing the car(paying couple of months payments for the same price etc).

Thanks for that it gives me no hope now at all lol so cheers

just to let you know ive been getting loadsa cheap or gearboxes on my multipla.ranging from 120-300quid so thanx to everyone for their help.

I too find myself in need of a gearbox. (For my 2002 petrol model)

Would you mind sharing any of the places you got quotes?

Why is everyone needing new ones?
can it not be repaired?
The main shaft seal went on mine leaking box oil everywhere and it cost me £100 to have the seal replaced and the bearings in the box put right although i did take it out myself.

they are notoriously weak. My diff broke up whilst driving along!! quite unpleasant. Hubby dismantled the GB and and rebuilt it, but it was never quite the same, eventually we bought a crashed car and he used the GB from that, it's fine now.

since then we have broken a couple of multis we have an ebay shop UglyBugBits. No gearboxes at the moment, they get snatched up, but we will get another car soon enough, so it's worth a check.

Hi all this is my first post!...I bought a 2001 1.6 today........it is leaking gear box oil at a fair rate out of the nears side gear box shaft gator, does anyone recognise this fault. Have a bought a terminal case?

Shaft gator? you mean the driveshaft seal? it seems to be common for the input shaft seal to go letting the box run low and spilling box oil onto the clutch but if caught early it shouldnt be a problem.
It just means the box has to come out to rectify it (not the case for the driveshaft seal though).

the oil, and there seems to be quite a lot of it, is coming out of the big end of the gaiter surrounding the shaft as it comes into the gear box, it looks like the type of rubber gaiter that normally surround a constant velocity joint. oil is running down the outside of the box and dripping off the middle where it meets the engine block.

Petrol gearbox must be quite different to the diesel ones then sorry i cant really help, check if its gearbox oil by smeling it as box oil is really smelly stuff.
Sounds stupid but smell inside the oil filler on top of the engine then smell whats leaked you should be able to tell at least youll know whats leaking as ive just replaced the main crankshaft seal on mine as it was leaking a little as well.
