i have a 1.0 fiat uno 1992 fire and i was wondering if a cherry bomb universal back box would fit and what size the inlet to the current back box is i also want to fit a performance air filter maybe a mushroom filter or k & n something like that and get rid of the panel filter i have not moved the airbox yet but would like to find out the size of the circle that connects to the airbox from the engine the air inlet thing thank you for reading and please post

A Cherry Bomb as a replacement for the existing backbox would not be a straight swap....
Though you could make a side exit pipe with a cherry bomb just a ead of the rear passengerside wheel.....;)

I kept my standard airbox, fitted it with a K&N panel, as I found one dead cheap on the net
[for once! . . . it came all the way over from Ireland . . . WTF?]

I also modded one of the two airboxes I had to get rid of the thermostatic flappy thingy

that gives a warm air feed from the exhaust manifold in cold weather
Standard airbox on the left of the pic below

Pic below of the full modded airbox that is currently fitted that now has two cold air feeds instead of one cold and one warm

This helped the motor run really well with quite C00L water TemP in the HeaT of Spain and Portugal in August/September

The area where a back box would sit is very very small, most cherry bombs, or there universals will be too long.

You can find a short middle box from many things in scrappy, and attach a halfords tail pipe to that.

if you want the cherry box sound, put it in the middle somewhere, and get some straight pipe bent up for rest. unos only need one box.

Side exit be nice though, but bit of a faff fiberglassing up the exhaust cut out on bumper

what would be needed to do this side exit exhaust conversion

here is a pick from under my 1.0 i.e.
taken from the driverside sill looking towards the passengerside of the car

You can just about see the zorst turn thru 90 degress, ahead of the fuel tank, and head towards the passenger side sill, before it turns thru 90 degrees again to go into the single rear box.

heres another view taken from the fron of the car loking towards the back
you can just about see the two 90 degree bends and the front of the single rear box

What you need to do is chop the zorst between the two 90deg bends and add in a small cylindrical silencer box with an exit pipe that will then continue outwards and under the passengerside sill . . .

what is the diameter of the exhaust pipe just after the first 90 degree bend

I was wondering about fitting a back box too. But after some discusion, would it not be easier to take out the silencer and put a bit of pipe in so it comes from the cat to the back of the car with no silencer box. Wouldnt give quite the same effect but surely quite close, and alot less work?

You would have zero silencing and you would also lose all back pressure. Engines need some back pressure to run effectively. Cherry Bombs are also designed so that they still offer some silencing, plus they also 'tune' the sound of the exhaust to give it a deeper tone. Think of it like playing a lower note on a church pipe organ. The lower notes give a deeper sound through the bigger pipes, the higher notes give a more treble sound through smaller pipes. A straight piece of pipe in place of the standard silencer won't tune the exhaust at all and will likely sound tinny and raspy. It will also fail your MOT for noise levels and likely to get you pulled by the Police for noise pollution!

A tail bomb, from custom-chrome.co.uk are around 28 inch long from tip to tip. just had a measure up on my car and it will fit, and they are quite slim compared to most back boxes, will need some pipe to make up the gap of where the old silencer was, but seems pretty easy.

Removing the thermostat is quite a brainless action. Car makers don´t put any useless parts on a car. Starting up the car will run worse and in the winter you will use a lot more petrol due to ECU compensating with more fuel. (n)

Some one had taken the flap out of the air cleaner input on one of my 84 Uno's.

Even on a relatively warm day about 10 degrees, I got icing, the air intake pipe from the exhaust was also missing. I got a pipe for the warm air exhaust intake, still got icing. I took off the cold inlet pipe and blocked the air intake by about 50%. Now there is no icing, (so far).

I will need to fabricate and put a manual Summer/Winter flap back in.
And do the same mod to my other 84 Uno.

well it is possible to fit aftermarket exhaust!! got a tail bomb from custom chrome. i cut my silencer off right at the box, then chopped off the pipe that leads to the back and used the straight section, got a sleeve to connect the 2 and bolted the tail bomb to that and fits just right.

its a nice ooks and its not massivly loud like the massive ones most people have on their corsa's ect.

i thought i was going to need to get some pipe made up, but some carefull thinking and measuring ment i could use the straight part of the exit pipe

:D

yeh, its just a nicer tune to listen to. lol. it was more look i was after tbh. i will get a pic and post it up
