I want to install a decent sound system but havent got a clue. I have seen adverts for subs/amps but dont know what their job is. can someone guide me. if i buy a decent head unit what else will i need and will the standard speakers do or will i have to upgrade them?

hello m8, u got to ask ur self wat u lookin for from ur system. if u want crisp clear loud then u want to spend a lot of money. but if ur like me u want something thats is quite loud clear enough to hear but dont have a lot of cash, then u will be ok with std speakers, as long as u run the stereo flat.

sub... u want crisp and clear 10", slightly deeper and less clear then 12" and if u want a mega bass line would go for a 15". then u got compertition subs, eg, 12" with bigger bass line than a 15" and clearer than a 10".

amps. well depend wat u want to run. if u r sort on cash but u want a loud system i would go for 6x9's running off an amp, u will need an amp for ur sub so u could end up with a) 2 amps 1 for sub and 1 for speakers. or b) 1 good amp with channels to do both.

Speakers. i got JBL 5x7's in the front, JBL 13cm in the back,JBL 6x9's going in to my boot with my boot build, i got crisp clear noise but i run my stereo flat.

Re: Re: I.C.E

i disagree with smee slightly. Definately upgrade your front speakers and head unit as the first step, the fiat ones do not cope at all well and distort a lot with any bass or volume.

Next i would put an amp and sub in, i would chose a sub size on what type of music you listen too. The bigger the sub the slower it will respond meaning it will handle lower frequencies and vice versa. If your into drum and bass etc i would get a bigger sub, dance a smaller sub. Putting a big expensive sub in will sound poor if your trying to get it to do something it can't.

After this i would run better wire to your front speakers and get an amp on them.

If your on a limited budget get an amp and a set of 6x9's, they are a good starting point for a reasonable all round sound in my opinion!

Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

no fiat 1 r fine, to an extent. u got to run ur stereo flat tho. but u all should cos if not it buggers ur speaker properly

Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

The fiat head unit is a waste of space! Its REALLY bad sound quality!

First job would be new head unit and some good front components.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

head unit yes, speaker no...... get a sub and amp and run the stereo FLAT.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

sorry smee, i disagree, the fronts are crap, i run mine at -6dB bass and they still distort like hell!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

The fiat speakers (made by nokia) are not good if pushed. Get some new ones :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

Aren't the stock speakers made by Nokia....? You know, the well respected HIFI manufacturer!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

The only way you can run the fiat standard fronts at any volume is if you take all the bass completely off (i.e minus as far as it will go) and still they will distort at volume.

I used to run mine like that with all bass in the boot until I saw the light and got myself some components :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

well the only thing i think of is that they were pushed to hard before u then, i bought my brava when it was a yr old. an old man had it before me.... and the speakers on my new head unit was good. the only reason i changed them was because i was experimentin with loudness and turnin the bass up and i ****ed the speaker up. but run it flat.... i.e everything set to default. no minue or plus bass, trebal and loudness off, set the sub up to do the bass and u dont even get bass come out ur front speakers..... just the trebal.

i got a sony cdx630m.
0 bass
0 trebal
no loudness
LPF = 128hz
HPF = 78hz (could be other way round ill check next week when car is back)
my sub and amp on the sub out cord... not a preout. gives me independent sub control on head plus u get no trebal or mid down the sub..... its just the bass.

not had any problems at all.

p.s front left JBL is shagged :( lol i gave it a bit of RnB testing when setting up my sub.... ohwell can i fit 16cm in there?? i got a spare set.

well from all the comments i take it i need a new head unit, some decent front speakers, 6x9's, a sub and an amp. now for which make i need. i like dance music by the way so a little bass but not TOO much. and will i need to disconnect the other 4 fiat speakers

Re: Re: I.C.E

if your getting a sub you don't really need the 6x9's and the components will replace your front fiat speakers.

Depends on your budget, if your going for dance get a 10" sub, many people seem to recommend the jbl's

Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

Yeh deffonatly change the standard CRAP! nokia speakers, hehe.

Im skint and hense bought a pair of Kenwood 13cm jobbies to replace the rear nokias and MY GOD what a difference i actually have bass, and even more so its clear, treble is sharper etc. Im still waiting for my 5X7`s to arrive at my local car hifi shop DAMMIT!!! so for now im stuck with the nokia crap, the previous owner blew them i think as they just barely work now, distort at the slightest hint of volume. If your after clarity then deffo change the standard crappy cable too.

if your not a bass head then if you fork out for good quality componants front and rear you could get away without a sub, 6X9`s are ok but need to be set up properly when run with a sub otherwise it will more than likely sound crap.

Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

Yeh if your a dance fan like myself, depending on the dance, if its really fast house without lots of basslines go for a decent 8 inch sun as it will be faster than a 10 or 12. You will also need an amp to power this.

If you buy 5X7`s to replace the standard ones in the front doors agen spend that bit more as the qualiry will speak for itself.

Also if your going for a sub you can get 6X9`s too but it would be better to get some componants to replace the standards agen, these like the front door 5X7`s should run off the headunit if you have a decent one. If your really after quality you should replace the standard speaker cable too.

Re: Re: I.C.E

If you are having a sub DO NOT get 6x9's unless you like nasty distorted sound.

A 10" sub usually does the trick. Unlike what everyone else has been saying the sound and 'speed' of the sub is not determined by its size. The sound is determined by the box.

A good 12" will sound loads better and punchier than a crap 10" or 8".

Re: Re: Re: Re: I.C.E

1 good sub will beat 2 cheaper ones :)

John, did you find a supplier of the deadening?

so i need 1 good sub, an amp, a decent set of front speakers and some decent wiring. No 6x9's and leave the other 4 speakers alone

Re: Re: I.C.E

Yup, and a hew head unit and a few spare days :)

What sort of money were you thinking of spending and what is your preffered musical choice?
