Why did I do it - madness, it cost NZ$100.00, someone had hit a fencepost with it and the front lights are broken, and the front bumper has fallen off. 125000km, a bit rough, I haven't got a clue what I will do with it. Has anyone got any good suggestions. I might borrow the front shocks for my 70s (if they fit) for a while. Would it be any good for a track car or would I have to spend all my lotto winnings on it to make it work any good. It has been deregistered.

I read once that Uno stings make excellent demo-derby cars :) Its because the engine was designed for the rear engined 850 so no vital parts are forward of the engine (except for the radiator which you remove and bipass anyway since you generally aren't going long enough for over heating to be a problem as long as there is some water in the system).

The 903cc engine isnt worth the metal its made of and most of the other bits that would be damaged in a demo derby dont matter.

Just remove any good parts (like windscreen) and if you can replace any good panels with dodgy equivalents that might be a good idea.

Otherwise they are light and nimble, so perfect for a demo derby :)

I'm gunna get hate mail now :)

these little stings get abused!!

Sure are basic aren't they, single speed fan, single speed wipers.

Some time ago an auto electrician put the wrong switch or wiper in mine, supposed to be 2 speed but now it is single speed. I am not sure what to look for get my 70S it back to two speed. I think it was the wiper, the switch is still the same, a two speed one that only works on 1 speed.

You can remove the switch and check that each position is working with a multimeter. If the switch is fine then what may have happend is that the wiper motor was changed at some point for a base model single speed unit. These don't have the connections to run two speeds as I found out when trying to upgrade my base model 45 a few years back :bang:

Put it on an end, bury half of it, and call it modern art.
Sell it.
Buy something else.
Half bury it.
Sell it.

Rinse and repeat. :D

LOL - No it wasn't too bad a joke. Actually I quite liked it, made me smile.

We had a very amazing Netball team here, "The Sting" won 7or 8 out of 10 national competitions and was runner up in the others. Most other teams got "stung" by the "Sting". Only 1 other team beat it in the National competition.

That is the end of the rubbish.

Are the front MacPherson struts the same in all Uno models.

The timing chain rattles like it is about to fly apart, but looking at Haynes I see no tensioner. Not that it matters, I am not going to do anything with the engine anyway.

Yes, with the exception of the turbo models which use harder dampers. Also the spring rates differ between models - I suspect the 903cc Sting is the same as the FIRE models but not as stiff as the 1116/ 1299/ 1301 models. The turbo uses slightly lower and the most stiff springs of all.

Saying that, I once fitted front struts and springs from a 1984 70S onto my 1986 45S and I didn't notice a lot of difference. I suppose you could swap the Sting struts/ springs onto your 70S and see what they feel like but I suspect they may be too soft. You could however swap the 70S springs onto the Sting struts and then all would be well with the world :)

The more I think about it, the more I think you should "part out" that Sting (an American term). You can strip an Uno in a couple of days. Keep all the screws, bolts, and clips; you will find those really handy, much better than the tat you buy from Supercheap or Repco.

The doors, bonnet, and tailgate don't take much space to store. Bumpers are light and can be chucked in a roof space. The doors are no use to you but very useful for owners of Uno Turbos like mine  Bonnet and tailgate are really handy for repairing a minor shunt without making an insurance claim.

Tailights are useful - never buy a 21W bulb again!

Fusebox - never buy a fuse again...
Even the engine is potentially worth quite a lot on Trademe to a person restoring a FIAT 850. Gearbox parts should interchange with your 70 to some extent. I'm pretty certain that CV joints are the same, and brakes definitely are.

The potential savings far outweigh the $100 cost and we haven't even talked about things like tyres. Even just a single rust-free door would be worth more than $100 to me - think of the time it takes to repair a door, and $100 is pocket-money.

Feeling better? ;)

If the car doesn't require much to make tidy, that could be worthwhile too, but without seeing the car it's hard to know. You really should post some pics :)
