Technical I am going to shoot my Multi...

2001 JTDELX 110 135k miles owned by me from new.

I'm going to shoot it if it doesn't stop mucking about.

Symptoms - one can drive hundreds of miles on the open motorway and other roads, then as soon as one hits serious traffic & the engine gets hot, all accellerative power disappears. Leave the road and rest (say for 30 mins), re-start and all returns to normal (until the next serious traffic jam). This is sometimes accompanied by smoke (lots, very embarrassing) sometimes white, sometimes black.

No dashboard messages, no readouts when attached to the "examiner".

First thought - airflow meter - replaced that (also full service inc air filter), no change.

2nd thought - the temperature sensor that feeds the ECU - replaced - no change.

3rd thought - buy a gun.

Any alternative thoughts out there?

Clean the EGR! Try using 10K boost £20 at Halfords or 3EGR by Wynns if you can get it.

The best method, of course, is to remove the EGR and clean it. Simple if it's the early version on the front of the engine, difficult if it's the later version at the top right rear.

Any coolant loss / temperature rising on the dash guage?

Tempted to say "have a look at the EGR" If it has a torbo do you hear any whooshing noises from under the bonnet? Does the turbo spool up? White smoke can be coolant or even brake fluid via the servo vacuum pipe.

Deffo no loss of coolant or brake fluid.

Interestingly, when turning the car in the cul-de-sac a few days ago, the car gave out a truly MASSIVE black smoke fart which lasted for about 15 secs.

I reckon that the EGR valve has just cleared itself.

Off to the menders on Monday for some more checks and a proper clean of the EGR valve.
