Found the prob with the oil in my manifold was due to the turbo. Turbo technics say it is beyond repair. A hybrid turbo (diff compressor wheel and 360 degree bearing) from them is pretty steep at £713 but they say its good for 180bhp and gives reduced lag. What are your thoughts guys?

No not really, i just got a Garrett GT25 Ball Bearing turbo for £550, there was a chap selling new genuine ones on eBay but think they all sold. I am not sure what a Hybrid would be like, depends on spec. :)

yeah its a garrett t2. They said it had been specifically designed for the 1400 engine, oh year and a 2 year warranty

Hi,

Only you can decide whether its worth it, but one will improve the performance of your uno.

£700+ isn't cheap, but there's been a lot of talk (no offense) in the past of cheap ebay turbo's going pop - one recent example: http://www.turbocollective.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=2771

Do you get a warranty with the ebay ones - i mean a real one?

I must be getting old (and a little boring) - my view now is that its better to save the money (for the uno), and use it when you need it (though i appreciate you need a new turbo) - such as MOT time, or to freshen up your bushes - replace the tyres before they are low..etc

You could pick up a good secondhand (if you buy carefully from a trusted seller on here or TC) T2 for not a lot of mula.

I couldn't agree more :)

The original turbo is so durable that if my turbo went pop, I'd buy another second-hand standard turbo. I suppose this logic will fail eventually when it becomes impossible to get second-hand parts that have done a 'reasonable' mileage.

Seven hundred pounds... I think I'd expect a complete rebuilt engine for that.

I bought a rebuilt turbo in a larger size many years ago for $250 (less than 100 pounds). Never used it - still waiting for my original turbo to pop. I have to admit, the Japanese make some things (like turbochargers) very well.

I've got a turbo dynamics hybrid on my mk1 uno turbo, you can see the blades on both sides are much bigger than standard and much bigger than the turbo technics unit,

go for a hybrid the noise mine makes at 20psi is unreal the standard boost guage points down and it holds 20psi all the way to the limiter at 7K.

standard turbo cant even hold 1 bar of boost and is only good for 130-140bhp.

I've got a stage 1 turbo technics hybrid turbo in my shed you can buy off me cheap

I've also got a standard turbo too which you could have but it has a bent fin, only realised when i upgraded to my turbo dynamics hybrid, it worked fine.

this is my hybrid that is on my uno now u can see how much bigger the blades are compared to standard and the turbo technics unit. (not forsale)

Shouldn't I be going for a garret turbo though as mine is the mk 2 engine? I heard the garret was a mod people did for their mk 1s for an upgrade?? Has anyone tried a punto gt turbo unit on their mk 2? I was told it was worth doing. I want to make my turbo x19 as quick as I can in terms of bang for buck! Fast as it was, when I raced the uno (before I took the engine out) against my mate's alfa v6 x19, it wasted me after 60mph! - I need to keep up! - oh i'm going down the charge cooling route to reduce lag. An x19 (being mid-engined) is crap for the intercooler cooling. Besides one air vent is for the oil cooler and the other is a direct feed for the pipercross filter

Later Mk2 Unos (the ones with cat converters) came with IHI turbochargers as standard too ;). not the same spec as the IHI found on the MK1..

the IHI on the MK2 apparently have the garret flange, unlike on the MK1 (y)

Don't standard Punto GTs also have IHI (I don't know)
