Desire or Desire HD?

Ive been on the Android rooting game for just over 2 years now so Ive got a little bit of knowledge in the area. Only root really if you are wanting to seriously mod your phone.

Positives of rooting is you can control your CPU leading to increased battery life through underclocking or if you overclock, a much faster phone. You can also have custom roms (which im sure youre well aware of) that allows you to have a different/improved experience.

With the ability to root you can gain access to having an improved stock Android with the famous cyanogenMOD team. They use the official released google code to create the latest android experience for their chosen phones. Youll find most roms are actually themed/partially modified roms of CyanogenMOD roms as the team basically does all the hard work.

As for actually rooting, if you find the XDA forum a bit daunting check out the cyanogenMOD wiki. They have a step by step guide of how to root and mod the phones they use (desire and desire HD are well covered) aswell as live chat for any questions that arise. Aslong as you check and double check as you go along the tutorial you really cant cock up and brick your phone. Infact I soft bricked my old G1 and using some XDA advice and some CyanogenMOD live chat advice I got the beast back in action with some simple commands in windows CMD.

Just make sure you read up everything that is mentioned in the tutorials and double check you know what everything means and is asked from you and itll be a piece of cake.

@ChrisUK im currently using Android revolution HD by mike1986 on my DHD. Very nice stable sense rom. Just waiting for him to get the overclock 1.2ghz kernel for the 2.X versions of his rom :]

Done it now, but thank you for your response, im using the original Desire (y)

I used the unrevoked program, which routes any Desire without the need of a Goldcard.

currently running the MIUI-au ROM and is overclocked. its completely stable and have not had any trouble at all. even changed the boot animation to the MS-Bios one. for a bit of a laugh.

everything is backed up and running safetly. i have a copy of the Sense ROM for if i need it.

Nice on mate! Cause ive got the latest Sense rom im in no hurry to change theme yet  think some lads are working on porting the desire MIUI rom to desire hd so I might give it a bash for a day. What recovery manager are you using? clockwork recovery?

I copy recoveries to my PC too from the SD card just incase there is an issue + the recovery images can be massive. Clockwork on my DHD recovers over 1gb of data so my SD card space runs low quickly haha. Left the original T-mobile stock rom and a recovered Android revolution rom incase I run into issues for either.

lol i used to have the animation on my G1, havent really touched the current animation on my DHD as its covered in T-mobile ****e. My phone can boot up in 3 seconds...but t-mobile animations + htc animation in total last around 20 seconds ¬_¬

are you using stock keyboard (not sure what miui has) or gingerbread?

unrevoked installs clockwork recovery onto it. im using a 32gb HCSD so no problems with recovery files.

3uk never really put anything onto the SenseROM, was essentially stock HTC, the desire takes about 15sec's to get through the HTC boot screen, then if i didnt have the boot animation would load instantly with a few seconds of lockscreen installing SD screen. but the Bios screen was loaded for a bit of a laugh and because im a Geek....

the Miui keyboard is almost identical to the FroYo keyboard but instead of close keyboard icon in the bottom left it has a smiley's icon.

8gb class 6 right now =/ yeah youre lucky. T-mobile engineers got a hold of the latest Sense rom and delayed the phones just to put their bloat ware on it.

Ah I see, I installed the gingerbread.apk just to test out its improved precision and library and im hooked. Had swype and the latest sense keyboard before it. Im pretty sure to official update my DHD i need stock rom with all the t-mobile crap on it to allow it to be installed so i havent touched the bootani until im sure it isnt a req for updates.

Im sure HTC have said that they wont be offically doing a 2.3 update for the original desire =( so ive took the risk and rooted and ROM'd it. i guess there will always be an unoffical 2.3 root to upload (y)

i like the FroYo keyboard, much better than the one on 2.1, dont know if i can get the 2.3 Gingerbread keyboard to work with the ROM

im pretty sure that CyanogenMOD has 2.3 rom ready to be flashed on the desire. The name is CM7 and itll be either in the developement forum on the XDA>desire section or on CyanogenMOD website under experiemental>desire rom.

Yeah you can mate, my keyboard is from the desire forums a while ago. Just search for the gingerbread keyboard for sense roms and itll just be an .apk to install. If not on forums a few mins googling it and youll find it

and its just occurred to me its on the market too. Some developer has it for download. Search "steven lin" and its the first app. Its the exact same one im using but on the market for instant download :slayer:
