HT leads..how do you know when they need replacing...Tom??

Hi guys
Was just wondering when how you tell when the spark leads needs replacing(likely symptoms) and likely cost to purchase & fit..?
Not having problems at the moment,but advice for the future please.

Usually bad cold starting, lack of power, missfire under power... lots of little symptoms.

Modern silicone ones (yes, Fiat ones are silicone) last a long time. Rubber ones would die quite quickly. The test used to be to touch the HT lead and see if you got a shock, if you did they were shot.

Test the lead to see if you get a shock? I'd have to test it with a mate...

I yanked a plug lead of my MGB once while trying to solve a missfire. I had been working on the mini which had nice silicone leads which had enough shroud on them not to give you a belt, the MGB had cheap rubber leads.

All I remember is hearing a loud crack as the lead came off and then finding myself slumped against the garage wall with pain shooting down my arm.

Jeesus,sounds like fun finding out if they're shot.
Mines a 96 Brava by the way.Not sure whats on there a the moment but will go silicon if they do need replacing.
Whats the likely cost on these & any tips on replacing a set,please

Silicone for sure Only £30 for a brand new set of fiat originals. I would not use aftermarket ones on it due to the plug being so far down in the head.

Do you find leaves down around the plugs?

Not really,so I'm hoping no aftermarkets have been used.Any advice you can offer on replacing a set to silicone ones please mate.Are these only available from Fiats.?

wow, this is great! Tom has fixed my car for me yet again! lol.
this would explain the difficulty turning the engine over when its cold 1st thing in the morning and the sometimes dip in power when you floor the pedal

If the starter turns slowly its not the HT leads

Worn plugs will also give similar symptoms to shot leads.

Change the plugs on a 1.6 every year, the 2 year period Fiat give is TOOO long.

its not that, its spins up right. it just takes an age to start the engine

just changed the plugs to densos as they didn't have any NGK or Champs where I went :s lol
