how do u tell the engines apart

hi, just looked at my cinq n it looks like it has had the engine either swapped or bits re-located, it has been suggested that mayb a 1.1 has been put it in, is there any way 2 tell?

if your bay looks like this

then it's a FIRE engine (could be 1.1 or 1.2)

if not then it's an 899

do you have a pic?
 
if a 1.1 or 1.2: there will be a cambelt on the battery side of the engine, the rocker cover will be at the front of the engine bay, if a standard airbox (unlikely if it has been converted) it will be on top of the engine, Throttle body will be at the back of the engine.

if 899: there is no cambelt, the rocker cover is at the back, with the throttle body in front of it, and the airbox will be in front of the ECU
 
I had the problem of trying to tell the difference between the versions of 1.1 engines. The VIN plate numbers couldn’t be relied on as the engine had been changed at some point and I couldn’t (for love or money) read the serial number on the engine.

If you’re faced with the same problem, take the pitch of the teeth on the cambelt.

(might be common knowledge, but it took me a while to work out)
