This thread is a little bit of info that might help everyone to keep their diesel running if the site mods wish to make it sticky quite happy for them to do so.
1. Diesel fuel filters always change regulary if you do this especially in winter and summer you will have good running. The quality of diesel does vary and sometimes you get water in the system as part of your overpriced litre of diesel.
This happens especially in winter with low outside temp.
2. Intake system change air filter check hoses and clean outside of intercooler. A diesel needs air any obstruction to this causes poor running.
Keep your air system clean if EGR fitted and you can clean it clean it if you can remove intercooler and clean it out even better.
Look for any loose clips on the intake any loose or damaged pipes cause air leaks so just tighten change them if required.
3. Engine oil very important it lubricates the turbo bearings recenntly with new oils and longer services.
Turbos have a bad habit of packing up its expensive toreplace a turbo plus all the time the car is off the road.
So instead of following the OEM recommended change it more regulary 5 litres of oil and a filter is chaeper than a turbocharger.
4. Diesel pipes these perish with age on rubber pipes some only have a life of 5 years before going porous and leaking.
So if you have a leak or a pipe that is perisished change the others at the same time or you will spend time replacing them at a ossible breakdown.
5. Cooling its a old wifes tale that all diesels run cold they do not thety are just like all other engines so if its not getting to temp as iot should change the thermostat cheap part and will save you gallons of diesel.
6. Electronic sensors ( cranksensors/ MAF/ MAP) they do not last forever if you change a cranksensor after a few years will run better same applies to MAF it measures the air flow by heating a part of the sensor on most.
As more dirt falls on the sensor its performance deteriotes so the ecu has to account for this and example being a new one gets 500 flow an older one 460 your engine compensates for it .so your flow of air may be higher and you get under fueling.
If you can measure sensor with a meter and its out of tolerance replace it.
7.Glow Plugs easy check between the tip and the body usually measure 0.9 ohms with wires disconectedf so if its above or below that usually a sign of wear but chack resistance of new one first as some older plugs this varies on the resistance
8. EGR clean em out adds soot to system
9. Additives
Use the following every couple of months Forte Advanced Diesel treatment
I have used this over many years keeps fuel system clean of deposits and cleans injectors.
10K boost induction cleaner cleans egr without stripping but spray the engine side of the MAF otherwise your MAF will break.
Cetane Booster if you use Tesco diesel you will need.
Most diesels have bio in them nowadays so tend to be a bit down on the cetane rating
10. Fuel
Keep to good makes, supermarket quality is not consistant just think of all the TESCO diesel and petrol problems over last few years in the Press.
They just had silicone in it another alert, if they can not keep quality of diesel right makes you wonder about their food.
Everytime i fill up at tescos have to put cetane booster in so use BP shell ASDA or Morrisons.
Also lower MPG on tescos have calculated it 4mpg less
