Also Fiat dealers also update ISR records if they change anything on other models without a body computer, or if they find that the ISRs data is incorrect.

Oh right. Cos my dealer told me that if say they fitted another lock system to a car, and the owner didn't inform a new owner of the change and the code for the locks, they would be fafed if they needed to order a new key because the data base that the dealer accesses when ordering a new key etc is only a record of what the car was like when it left the factory

I tell you they do talk some tosh by the sounds of it.

Thanks for all this guys - took it in to a local garage, and they say the key needs re-programming - they're trying ot get hold of their tame engineer - but having no luck.

Does anyone know of someone who could do this in the North Wales/ Cheshire area ?

thanks :)

So the £15 I paid for a code for the Panda was actually what ISR charged?

Yes. Dealer makes no money on getting the codes- it's not worth the hassle for 5 mins work (plus 15 mins waiting for a response).

Who did you talk to- dozy receptionist or Technician?

If the owner supplied a secondhand set of locks, keys and ECU's to be fitted then the ball is in their court to inform the Dealer/ future owner of the change in keycode and mechanical cut of the key itself.

Like I said, if a genuine new lockset and keys are ordered from Fiat, the keycode remains the same and only the mechanical code (key cut) is changed for security reasons. The change in key cut is recorded at Fiat and all future keys are supplied cut to that new shape. I'm not sure if ISR are informed of the change in mechanical code, but then a new key is not ordered through them. ;)

Ending the saga - having towed the car to the local garage - it then sat for almost a week as they tried to get their tame locksmith to come out :bang:

So a trawl through the local yellow pages found a result ! Guy came out to the garage and re-programmed the key for £55 looks as though pretty much anyone can do this now :D

Adding in a new battery, it cost me a little over £105 - a hard lesson in making sure you don't leave the car standing for a fortnight in freezing cold winters, and with an older battery, without at least turning the engine over on a fairly regular basis - serves me right for staying over at the in-laws and being unable to drive having had far too much of the Christmas spirit ;)

Thanks everyone,

Beedge
