Hi - Stilo 1.2 16v Active 4 dr

I left my car standing over the holiday period, and the battery went flat :-( and am now presented with the range of electical warnings that seem to crop up all over the forum EBD, ASR etc.

But it would seem that the Immobiliser has kicked in - get the Engine warning light together with the padlocked car -

I've now gone and bought the CODE from Fiat, and am trying to go through the sequence as detailed in the handbook (p. 268) with the depression of the throttle after so many flashes, but it doesn't seem to be working - what am I doing wrong ?

Do I wait for the engine light to flash on, then off - for a count of 1 and then press the throttle for 4 seconds, or do I press the throttle as soon as the light goes on for a count of 1 ?

The engineer gave me the number over the phone, and is posting the printout to me - cost £18 + VAT - so hope he misread it to me.

thanks,

Beedge

Hi, Welcome to the FF>

The emergency start procedure is designed to get the car started if the key-code is not working. It doesn't bypass the code permanently. If you enter the code successfully, the car should start once so you can drive it to a garage but you will need to re-enter it every time you start the car.

I've only used the procedure once just to test it but it worked for me exactly as described in the handbook. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact procedure and don't have my early handbook with me. It's not printed in the later Stilo handbooks.

The code number to use is the Electronic Code and should comprise of 5 numerical digits.

Dave.

The emergency code dance. Are you ready?

Thanks guys - guess I've got to try a few more times to get the sequence right :)

Have the manual and allm just not sure if I was dong it right.

Once I do get it going - I sipppose I'll have to go to the dealer, but what then ? Only have one blue key and no red master key

When the Fiat dealer gave you the Electronic Code, they should also have given you the alpha/numeric Mechanical Code. You'll need that if you need to get a new or your existing key programed.

Dave.

:bang::bang::bang: Starting to do my head in ! Got the code from Fiat, and have tried several times, and it still won't unlock

Would you recommend takking it in to the Fiat garage, (have to get it towed 10 miles, of course) and getting them to sort it out for me ? Any idea of how much this might cost ? Or would an auto electrician be of any help ?

Desperate for any advice,

Thanks,

Beedge

If the emergency start procedure doesn't work it could be you've been given the wrong number.

Would seem your only option is the dealer. No idea how much it's likely to cost because the problem hasn't been diagnosed yet.

Dave.

Yep. the battery's fully charged, had it on trickle feed, but it's probably overdue for a change, which probably caused all of the problems in the first place !

I've had the car from almost new, only 1 previous owner, so hoped that the immobiliser hadn't ben changed, but you never know.

Fear it's time to get the tow-rope out !

Keycode number never changes, even if the Body Comp is replaced as a new unit is programmed by Fiat Spare Parts with the original vehicle security data. Only thing that can change is the mechanical (key-cut) code if the locks are replaced. Of course, if someone goes through the hassle of swapping everything from another car, then the keycode will now be different.

Your only option is a simple Dealer diagnosis to determine if it is a key or Body Computer issue (a jump-start may have spiked the ECU).

I was clarifying the point you made- if the Body Computer is replaced by a Dealer using a new unit from Fiat, the keycode will be the same as ISR have recorded. If an owner fits the B/C, Engine ECU and locks and keys from another car to cure a fault, the keycode will then differ from what ISR state, and ordering/coding new keys will be a pain in the arse. ;)

ISR are not notified of codes iirc unless owner called them and puts them on file (according to ISR website), so Fiat won't be notifying them of if they change the code at all or not.

ISR will also not give out info like codes, they'll just cross check a code you read to them with what they have on database and say if it is the same or not iirc also.

Fiat won't change the code? A new Body Computer is ordered to chassis number and pre-programmed by Fiat Spare Parts with the original code and key data.

ISR give us codes all the time- we fill out a simple online form, with the owner's name, address, vehicle chassis number, etc then 15mins later they fax all the data over (mechanical code, keycode, radio code).

We even had a situation the other day when a code supplied by them was not recognised by the car, even though the ordered key matched the others. We contacted Fiat and got the code directly from their records. Turned out that someone at ISR entered a '5' when they should have put a '2' when loading the data when the car was first registered. We rang and told them, and they changed it their end. ;)
