Fiat Uno 45 1989,boot lock is a square push in button, that is stuck in the pushed in position, can only unlock the boot by getting to the lock from the inside of the car,the button will not come out,key still fits and turns but wont open, any ideas as to how easy it is to dismantle the lock etc,

try putting the key in, turn it slightly in the lock and pulling the button out with key (y) Only pull it out as far as standard and then try WD40ing it.

It's a comon one on MK1s - or was in the 90's when mk1s were about

Hi, thanks for your time to respond,I have tried that already but button will still not pop out,I'm wondering if its poss to replace just the button but then I'm going to need a key as well? from your knowledge would you think it is just the button that the Mk1's had a problem with or the whole lock etc?,cheers.

The plastic of the button splits open - it is then too large to fit through its hole. The button has a core made of some cheap alloy (metal). Some people just break all the plastic off, but that's a bit rough - I suggest slicing/filing/sanding it down until it fits smoothly in the hole again. For a nice tidy job you might even fill the split with some black epoxy resin or black silicone sealant.

Note that the handle is completely separate from the lock button and has no part to play in this.

Forgot to mention - the button is fairly easy to remove - two screws behind and a plastic link rod to unclip, then there is a wire clip (a bit like a window-winder clip) to locate and flick out, the button will then spring out (or perhaps pry out in your case). Louie is right on the money as far as using the key to pull the button out.
