my last one was fairly reliable, but did have problems notably with the exhaust around the manifold. and i gave up on it when the clutch went as it was going to cost too much to sort out:( it was never much of a problem for MoTs went straight through the first year, when my brother was expecting it to fail and was going to scrap it. second year it failed on rubber brake hoses perished. third year it needed a tiny bit of welding doing in the floorpan on the drivers side, though it was so small i wasn't even charged for it.

the new one has been pretty reliable so far (frantically touches wood) passed the MoT the other day (with 4 advisorys) and apparently the tester remarked it's in excellent condition! several jobs still to do on it but it should be worth it. i knew it needed some work when i got it, and so far it's not been anything beyond my capabilitys luckily.

its never broke down on me, had odd thing to do on it but only miner things that i did myself. it failed its last test on brakes which cost me a bit because i had to replace both rear sliders, both back discs and pads and front discs because he said one was warpped but i dont think it was cause still having problems under hard braking on that side so i think it might be one of the sliders that has got stuck so im going to strip it down and see if i can free it up. underneath is solid everywhere, i've got no oil leaks and it starts first time every morning even when its freezing. all in all for 16 years old its more reliable than new cars and i wouldn't swap it for anything.(y)

my blue tipo wants an mot, but i dont want to get a new cat or do the welding onit or spend any money onit, incase its a total rot box.
its worth spending £35 on a mot test to find out if its worth saving yourself or selling it on to someone who has the time and money to put it right. the longer you leave it the more that will need doing.
