How do you replace door mirrors?

Hi,

Some unprintable in a truck has written off the passenger side door mirror on my wife's Punto JTD (52 plate). I've managed to source a replacement from ebay but I don't know how to get the broken one off to put the new one on.

Can anybody offer any advice please?

Haynes don't do a manual for the JTD and Ibegrudge paying the price for what is effectively the wrong manual. Otherwise I would look in there.

my money would be on there being an internal blanking plate on the inside of the door. remove gently with a screwdriver from the top corner. then if its anything like the bravo there will be torx screws holding the mirror to the door, undo and remove. hth in some way mate

there are just some people that screw you up and dont give a damn, unfortunately i seem to have found that one!!!

There are no torx screws, there is one big platic nut holding the mirror on, i had a 01 y plate punto so am guessing thats the same.

the answer is - with difficulty and lateral thinking!

Well, this job turned into a bit of a bi-atch.

It started well,
1. 'pop' off the little rubber boot thingy from the adjusting stalk

2. remove a plastic cover and the crosshead screm it hides.

3. wiggle and persuade the plastic triangle containing the tweeter until it comes off revealing the end of the door mirror.

Bugger! Fiat have cunningly designed the fitting of the door mirror so you need a custom fit tool to take it off. The shaft of the mirror has some ridges on it which prevent the srew coming loose because of flexible 'lugs' on the nut (looks a bit similar to a ratchet mechanism), all well and good but these also prevent the ordinary joe from undoing the damn thing.

I scratched my head for a bit then chopped up an empty water bottle, inserting the bits of plastic to hold the lugs off the ridges and then poked screwdrivers in 2 of the 4 points which the custom tool presumably fits into. With a bit of force, swearing and determination the nut came off.

Putting the new mirror on was a whole lot easier.

BTW, I got quotes from breakers for a replacement mirror, none of which came below £50. I got one for £29 inc postage from ebay seller jimanda69, whom I can heartily recommend.
