How can I capture on screen video/ streaming?

When I'm playing games on my PC and also streaming videos from the internet, is there any way of capturing these as videos (and audio) and saving them as a file on my PC? There seem to be a few programs out there but I'm not sure if any do exactly what I'm after.

Any Freeware software recommended as I only want to capture a few videos at the moment?

My PC is running an AMD Athlon 1.8 XP+ and 768MB RAM along with Windows XP if certain specs are required.

Stuff like youtube can be downloaded easily with new version of real player.

Fraps is limited unless you buy the full version.

I'm trying to capture a streaming TV programme from Irish Television (they use something similar to BBC iPlayer) and also some levels of a game on my PC.
