I agree the Fiat 500 has 'truck like' aerodynamics = ) Sorry Op but to get good economy on the Fiat 500 dont go above 60 mph = ((( At least all the drag helps slow down the car under braking from high speeds = )
I think the car can go faster than 190 kmh if it wasnt so drag friendly (i am talking about the 1.4 here).

Given your description, I think you are looking for a 320d.

Lol................................ Maybe a 330d if I'm honest ;)

@Jrkitching
Thanks for the help with the fuelly sig. I've never got it to work properly before - all up and running now :)

Yes, I've done mine too. Really pleased that from all of the manual workings out I did yesterday, that the Fuelly calc mirrors almost exactly, my own. Very useful.

Sorry, I've just seen your comment re my 'gutless' comment.
There is a difference between cruising speed and the way it gets up to it. The mjt will cruise reasonably well at decent speeds but the way it gets there is hard work unless you have a very big gap in the traffic or use revs like a petrol - I don't believe that it actually has the torque that they claim.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just looking for other peoples thoughts about these cars which I was really happy to buy but have been disappointed with ever since. All replies are appreciated.
:)

The published torque figure for the 95bhp MJ II is 200 Nm which is a lot up from the MJ I 75bhp at 145 Nm. I test drove a 75bhp before buying the second 500 and found it quite gutsy but didn't give it a blast on the motorway. Surprised at your disappointment on the performance because it is reputed to be good.

Btw - what model are you referring to when you say t-jet? (sorry for my ignorance).
With you having both an mjt and a twin air, what are their different uses? Which do you drive for which sort of journeys and what's the best for economy?

T-jet is the turbo charged engine using the 1368cc (the 1.4) and comes in the various states of tune from 120-160bhp. A500 (135, esseesse 160) Bravo (120 & 150), Grand Punto (120) GPA (155 & essesse 180), and Alfa Mito (120,155).
M-jet is the diesel with 1.3, 1.6, 1.9. The 1.6 is the replacement for the 1.9 & has lower emissions (114grs/km-126grs/km) but comes with 320Nm of torque. This 1.6MJ is a very impressive engine and will probably tick the box but does not give the satisfaction of a petrol engine which can rev. This 1.6MJ is a noiser engine that the 1.3MJ.

I drive the Mito 155TB (used along with a Marea weekender) and the OH drives the Mito MJ 1.6 (on the road a lot). TBH I preferred driving the 500 1.4 but was looking for another 20bhp. Dynamic setting in both cars is adictive but gobbles the fuel. MJ averages 50mpg (longer journeys) T-jet's current average is 33mpg for primarily around the town with occasional motorway jaunts.

Having thought about it - if you replaced the 500 MJ II with a MiTo 1.6 MJ this has bags of torque and performance and will average 50mpg.
If you 'drop' to a petrol the best that you will be able to manage is 40mpg on a motorway run.
But if you opt for one of the new Multi-airs e.g. in the Punto Evo or the MiTo the 135bhp model should return in the high 40s.

If I was based in the UK and doing your kind of mileage I would be looking at putting my name down for one of the new Abarth 500s with the multi-air engine (guess that it will be out in Q4 2012) or a secondhand Punto Evo 135MA or a secondhand MiTo multi-air model preferably in the 170bhp guise. The Abarths (GPA, A500) have a more raw drive with a higher insurance (depending on your age) but quite a few A500 drivers couldn't live with the 35-40mpg on the motorway. If you can accept the lower mpg it is hard to fault a 'cared for' standard A500.

Later on in the thread a 320D got mentioned. I drove this a lot in Germany as a hire car in 2000/2001 and it did nothing for me. The 330D is a great engine but only gives around 40mpg (this is good for the performance) but you will have high overall running costs. It also has to come in automatic for re-sale which is a no-no for me. There is the Cooper SD but I would not be interested in a MINI and certainly not at 18.5K+.

If you decide to go for a test drive in a Twin Air see if you can organise a 'courtesy car' for the day so you can assess if you can live with the sound of the engine on the motorway.

Had a 'go' at a few calculations but you would need to add on a 'extras' for the diesel in relation to extra oil changes and getting it 'reset'. The petrol engines would still warranty additional oil changes particularly if boosted more than the norm.

Sorry for coming across a bit thick here and I realise I'm probably setting myself up for ridicule, but....now I've done the whole fuelly thing and input all of the stats, why does it show my total fuel spend as only being £158.45 when the wife has actually spent £429.11 over 12 fill-ups? I don't geddit?

Please, if someone can put me out of my misery, then I would be grateful of an explanation. Maffs not my strong point!

Check how you're viewing your fuelly stats. By default, the total spend figure shown is that for the current year, not your total spend over the whole period you've entered data for.

I'm guessing the £158.45 is how much you've spent in 2012.

Hope this helps

See, I knew someone out there would know! Cheers mate (y)

Actually, last night when I was inputting all of the stats, we found we had a petrol receipt missing. Wife always inputs fill-up dates and mileage on her iphone, but not fuel. I get that from receipts. We had to therefore make a very educated guess. Hence I now see our total fuel spend is £466.44, not £429.11.

I always make the wife use a credit card when filling up as she always loses receipts.

Yes I know the regen really doesn't help. I often notice when it's doing it that the consumption is really poor for a few minutes.
Another MJT negative :-(

Are we talking British Motorway or German Autobahn here?

Had myself a 330D Msport for a month as a courtesy car when my last car was squished on the motorway. Absolutely loved it, but don't think I'd keep a clean licence for long over here. Silky smooth engine and 'box, sit all day at well over the national limit and was still getting low 40s mpg
:D
