Okay so decided since getting some new headlights its only fair to treat the car to a sexy HID kit. I'm just not sure on what to buy?

There's some on eBay at like £35 and some at around £100!

Any advice on what kit is a good one to use would be great.

Also of anyone has HID's just post a comment about your experiences and if there worth the money.

Thanksssss

Id buy one from a UK dealer, plenty of cheap kits on eBay that take 2 weeks or so to arrive. HIDs Direct are ok, and have a 2 year warranty.

Next you need to decide if you want a 35 or 55w kit?

Your new headlights, are they Standard Fiat ones, H4 fitment? If so, best to go with an H4-3 kit, this enables you to keep the Hi/ low beam function.

Bear in mind the whole “mot failure” stuff going around atm.

there genuine abarth headlights. and not got to worry about MOT still got about 8 months left before it needs to be renewed and the car will most likely be sold before then.

ive been looking at a 35W, H4, 6000K kit. how does that sound? about right?

Got for a 35w, H4-3, 6000K kit.

The H4 kit only has one beam, so you wont be able to flash.

H4-3 is much better as it keeps your hi-low beam. 6000k is a good colour, less likely to get any bother from the police.

To have HID's they can only be fitted to self leveling projection lamps with headlight washer jets. (AFAIK)

If you fit them to reflectors (which I assume all punto's have) you will blind everyone with your scattered beam pattern. They will also fail an MOT with them.

I had HID's fitted to my normal lights - I took it for a MOT and it failed because of them because one of them was scattered - i took it back to the guy who fitted them, he stripped it all down and made everything work great - Took it back for the MOT & It passed no problems, i asked the guy about the Lights and he said they weren't a problem.

If you have them fitted professionally they shouldn't fail an MOT.

BTW I had my MOT done @ Platts in Longton (Just off the A500)

Err yes they do, since Jan this year it has changed, although hasn't been fully inforced until recently. When was your MOT?

On top of this a car can pass an MOT, doens't make it legal, and they only check for beam pattern, not scatter.

So your professional fitment, how much did it cost, along with the installation of headlamp washers and the self leveling beam pattern which will be required with a correct professional fitting?

The fact is your light units still won't be E marked to the relivent standard to make them legal with HIDs fitted, regardless of 'professional' fit or not.

MOT was June

Well for me if it passed an MOT with them in it, it's legal enough for me

so your driving potentially un insured.. You get a switched on traffic cop who pulls you over for anything and they get noticed.. They can ring your insurer see if the mod is declared... If not chances are they will invalidate your cover due to none disclosure of material facts your car leaves in a flat bed and you leave on foot with six points minimum on your licence (worst case sinario)

There are lots of things that are illegal but would pass an mot because they aren't specifically checked. Aftermarket hid's have always been illegal (under construction and use legislation) unless they are e marked and fitted to a car with auto leveling and headlamp washers.

As has been pointed out, they have now been added as a specific failure item to the mot. Still, it won't be long until all mods are illegal under new eu rules. The dft have estimated that it is going to cost drivers over a billion pounds to put their cars back to standard.

Andy, you forgot the even more worst case scenario, invalidating your insurance in a claim situation resulting in you owing a 3rd party potentially £000's :p

I thought that was just classic cars over a certain age that rule would apply to?

only thing mot can fail on is no light, poor light, beam aim and pattern, and non working levelers and washers if fitted, if they are not fitted they cant fail it.
dft wanted to make them illegal but couldn't as eu rulings don't back it up as some new cars don't come with factory fitted leveling and washers even if hids come as standard

Which ones? I thought all have to have self leveling to be type approved in the EU (although have heard about what you say about washers before, and don't believe washers make much of a difference imo).

None massed produced cars have different regs I think, is it these without self leveling and washers?
