Hi,
I’m Richard from North Lincolnshire. What a great forum with some very knowledgeable members.
I have just got a 2000 Mk 2 Punto 1.9 ELX JTD, it’s a real pleasure to drive & my first diesel. My ex had a Punto 1.2 ELX Speedgear a few years ago & enjoyed driving it regularly.
The JTD has a couple of issues, the gear lever doesn’t spring into position for the next gear & it has a pretty bad diesel knock when started from cold but I feel confident that there will be posts somewhere on the forum that will help me to sort them out. It’s a real shame that there isn’t a workshop manual for it. I got a ‘genuine Fiat Punto manual CD’ off E bay but it is as much use as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest!

I’m a retired aircraft engine fitter so have a lot of experience with gas turbines & piston engines but no experience with diesels. The noise comes from the front of the engine & is very noisy when cold. The noise also disappears when the engine is revved & disappears completely after a few minutes. Diesel knock was diagnosed by an RAC man & he thought it was faulty glow plugs or an injector. I have changed the glow plugs (two of them were faulty) but it has made no difference. The so called diesel knock seems very mechanical to me, very much a hammer on an anvil sort of noise. I would be most grateful if anyone could throw some light on this problem?
Does anyone know where the gear lever spring is located please?
