hi we have a fiat ulysse 1998 2.0l petrol, been playing up since we bought it two months ago. Drove it home 25 mile without a problem but wont hold it's revs. Lifted the oill cap to find there was white gunk around the rim. Assumed it was the head gasket so did a full engine flush, filter changes, fresh oil and head gasket repair fluid. Took off all the pipes and noticed they were all full of gunk so cleaned them all out. Changed the sump gasket and cleaned the sump out.I think the owner before us had put water in the oil, It is now running better but has now started to hunt when idaling and cuts out on me sometimes at junksions. Need to keep adjusting the revs. The car does not over heat and doesnt loose water, any advice welcome.

The only way to be sure that the Head Gasket is OK (or not) is to do a compression test. The miracle in a bottle cures usually do more harm than good.

Hunting idle may be a result of a blown head gasket, air leak in the inlet manifold, or dirty throttle body.

Mayo in the filler cap may just indicate that the car has been standing for a long time (allowing moisture to get into the oil) or has led a life of short trips.
