Ian - HGT? Ash tray full in your 1.2 then?

Regarding running costs, I have had my HGT since new, 94,000 miles and she was bought in Jan 98.
she does around 32mpg average.
Running costs are not horrendous, well apart from the MPG, which is poor. But then again my other car is a 1.7 diesel works corsa van which does 50mpg so a poor comparison.
So what has gone wrong on my HGT in my ownership:
Normal servicing costs for the first 3 years, approx £180 average per service (every 12K) up till the 72K one which I got done for £600 including the Cambelt and tensioner.
One back box for the exhaust. (£200)
One Manifold for the exhaust. (£500 Eek)
One roof ultrasonic unit (£180, done under warranty)
One rear wiper unit (£30 froma scrappies)
Set of brake pads all round (£80 I fitted them)
Tyres, they are £160 a set from Elites in Rainham, Essex, Toyo Proxy's
One Battery (£60 fitted)
The Passenger door handle connector fell out (couldn't be opened from the outside) so I repaired that, took about an hour all together.
Um apart from that she has been a totally reliable car.
Out of that list of faults above only the roof ultrasonic unit and the door hadle are what I would call out of the ordinary faults, the rest is just wear and tear. So for me a totally reliable car. Only ever had to call out a rescue service once, and that was when the battery failed.

If you treat a HGT well she will look after you and be a good reliable car.

Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

I would say that was a lot of faults, for a 1998 car.

Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

A lot of faults, gotta disagree with you there.
Did you see the bit about it having done 94,000 miles?

Faults that I have not really been impressed with:

1. Roof ultrasonic unit, changed under warranty, didn't cause any problems apart from having to use the key to open and close the door rather than the remote.

2. Manifold, car had done 92,000 miles, thing I was pissed off about was the cost, rather than it actually
failing. Fair wear and tear.

3. Rear wiper unit, common fault, cheap to replace, saying that it's obviously a bad design, shouldn't have failed.

4. Door handle linkage, the rod had popped out, most prolly because the door was slammed too hard, user error rather than a fault of the car.

So, a battery after 3 years, average, now't to grumble about.
Back box for exhaust, again after 3 years, no probs there, average life.
Brake pads, they have to be changed, again fair wear and tear.

Out of all that I reckon the only thing I can say is a 'proper' fault is the roof unit and the wiper motor. Which in my eyes makes a reliable car. Especially after 5 years and 94,000 miles.

FaultS.

Don't get me wrong, I have had many Fiats and like them very much, but the majority have had numerous faults. One Bravo I bought from brand new was only kept for 9 months due to it's dire unreliability.

The faults I have had with my Fiats are;

Petrol pump and sender unit
Clock console failures x 2
Clutches x 2
Head Gaskets x 3
Alarm sensors
Heat shields falling off
Airbag warning lights
Burning of wiring loom
Air pressure sensor
Cam cover gaskets x 4
Batteries x 2
Failure of central locking
Locks themselves failing
Rear Wiper Motor failure x 2
Door leaks
Heater motor failure x 2
Electric Window Failure
Sticking calipers - numerous times
Exhausts X 3(a consumable, I know)

The motoring journals dont really compliment Fiat for their reliablity either, but so what - I was after an HGT for a long time before I got this one.

Faults

Most of what you've listed there are electrical problems - some of which I've experienced myself. Mechnically, I think the Bravo is no worse than many other manufacturers. It's just a shame the electrics are so dodgy.

Re: Faults

Roget think it's just your bad luck with fiats then....bet you can't wait to get the Honda

Re: Re: Faults

The Civic Type-R is a beast of a car, with 198bhp from a normally aspirated engine. Unfortunately, it doesn't have that "certain something" that Fiats (and most other Italian cars have). It is however, ultra-reliable.

Re: Re: Re: Faults

I forgot to say that the bastard wouldn't start this morning too, so add that to the list.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

I also forgot to say, a gearbox also failed.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

F**kin hell Roger... you have been unlucky - As Sy says i think you've had rather bad luck with yours.

Mr Al.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

Maybe.

Ironically, my first Tipo was an excellent car. No aggro whatsoever in 56k miles. Other than two tyres, front pads and a back box.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

Unfortunately i have decided that after all the oney i have put into my bravo i'd be mad to sell it,
The HGT i was after was Si's, If my sister hadn't have asked "can you REALLY afford it?" I'd have bought it there and then,

After all i now my has just had service, new cambelt, new pads/discs all round, engine steam cleaned, the alarm fitted, new starter new clutch, so that's 1 grand and i'd be lucky to get 2k for it so be a waste

Tahnks for your Help all

Mr Al sorry to let you down you'll have to wait for me to catch up as before lol

Less than a month away Al, remember remember the 1st December!!!!
I've just managed to clear of all my debt so after xmas and new year i'll start to play with my car, already got some amps, comps, the Ultimate Velocity front bumper and a rear valance(needs paint stripping)

I,m after some alloys similar to your 5 or 6 spoke but slim and sleek

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT Running Costs

Excellent.... but dont you go getting the same alloys as me lol.
