I know this has been raised before - but talk about jaguar-like consumption....
I dont understand how people with HGTs are getting any decent consumption out of their cars. I was crusiing back from the Cardiff on Sunday after the footie at 60 - 70mph (due to traffic congestion) and calculated the mpg to be exactly 26.4mpg (shite). Before that tank it was 21mpg (on the way there averaging 90mph, and the time before that was 17.8!!!

Even if you thrash a car (which I dont all the time) thats pretty bad going.

I am now obsessed with fuel conusmption and measure it after every fill, genuine average is about 18.7mpg anything over 20 is miraculous.

I live in London and its a 98HGT 147bhp with a Pipercross induction kit. And before you say anything I used to get 210miles to a tank tops before the light came on so that was crap anyway. I have just had my service so its not that either.

Its a pain in the ass paying £40 every week for hardly any miles!

What do you guys register?

17MPG :0 bloody hell!!!!!

No idea what most HGT people get but I am sure someone will fill u in...

I average around town about 18-20mpg , about the 240 mark before the light comes on.

Motorway - havn't done the maths but its around the 330 mark before the light comes on.

Thats 15520v HGT

Re: re: hgt mpg

HGT 155 20 equals same mileage as mentioned above. However, put the air con on whilst driving round town and it dips to 18mpg!!

Reckon air con is not such a good thing.

MPG

Hi Phil,

I'm not sure how it works out, but I fill it up on a Monday and do about 60 miles a day (I think - Sevenaoks to Southend) for four days a week. It's empty by Friday so I reckon I get about 240 to a tank.

I've recently started driving at a constant 70, to keep the cost of petrol down, I was usually sitting at about 90 most of the way and was getting about 190 to a tank.

Considered lpg? I know a guy with a golf GTi 2.0 16v, who had the conversion done, he does slightly more miles than me, and it costs him £15 - £20 a week on petrol!
You loose most of the boot and it slows the car due to decreased power and increased weight, but maybe worth considering if you do a lot of miles.

diesel bravo

hav,nt any of you guys considered swithching to diesel, i have most of the toys that a bravo has (alloys, electrics) and plenty of power and average 40-50 mpg at 80-90mph, also group 6 insurance

mpg

yeah I get about 240-260 miles from a tank.

switch to diesel?-no chance, love my 5 cylinder growl.

Re: mpg

Yep my Marea 20v only does about 20mpg.
My old supra bigger and heavier did about the same but twice the performance.
Then again the only reason I bought the car was the superb engine.

Bravo/Marea 2.0 mpg

Used to drive a Marea 2.0 20v (R reg) and over whole life of the car acheived 31.3 mpg.

My wife currently drives a Bravo 155HGT and to date has acheived 34.7 mpg over 4,000 miles.

The Bravo is mostly used on single carriageway 'A' roads with fairly unagressive driving (until I use it at the weekends!) wheras the Marea was primarily a motorway car with cruising between 85 - 90 mph.

My Alfa 166 3.0V6 returns an average of 26 mpg - better than some of you guys/gals with 2.0 Fiats!

Thought I would join in!

Especially at the comment about Jag like consumption!

No it aint my friend...my 155 HGT does 23mpg on Super (21 on normal) and my Jag does 13.8 according to the trip computer...even less according to my wallet!

Interesting about the 166 3.0 though as my 156 2.5 V6 used to do around 17mpg and only about 5% of my driving is done in town and I rarely leave the house until after 09:00!

However I am driving a 1.3 Fiesta courtesy car around and that is doing about 35mpg but it is one NASTY little car, so be thankful that you have a HGT and be PLEASED to pay for the petrol! I even swapped it for a 320 mile round trip in the Jag and paid the money so I didn't have to drive it!

hmmmmmmmmmmm

i have a 97 hgt and have kept A record of all petrol consumption over the last year and a half ive owned it, and average 29 mpg that includes a cold start dash of about 3/4 of a mile in the morning and one after work ... and some quickish drivin on various roads, i dont think its that bad really not for the best sounding engine ever to be put in a hatchback....yes that includes golf vr6's

Re: Thought I would join in!

The 166 3.0 is woeful around town/from cold. According to the computer a round trip to our local station (2 miles) returns about 12mpg.

How accurate are trip computers? We have calculated my sisters Punto over-estimates mpg by up to 8 mpg.

For this reason our figures are based on actual refilling with the car always filled to the brim to ensure a high degree of accuracy. Also figures are only calculated over a minimum of four or five fills to account for slight differences in how full the tank is.

Some other Fiat figures we have acheived:-
Punto JTD HLX - 62mpg (Not by me I hasten to add!)
Fiat Tipo 2.0 16v - 28mpg
Mk 1 Uno 60S (1100cc) - 48mpg
Seicento Sporting - 45mpg
Lancia Dedra 1.6ie - 39mpg
Tempra 1.8ie - 36mpg

Yeah I got the same question. Got my HGT 4 weeks ago, changed from a 406 2.0 GLX. Hoped to save a couple of mpg with the smaller car. Found out I'd jumped a couple of insurance groups and even better lost 5-10 mpg!!! First tank of super+ gave 21mpg, since then regular unleaded got between 24-26 mpg. Thought it was the max attack driving or maybe a service required, but now I'm kinda thinking it ain't so weird? Maybe it's just the price to pay for so much fun, it ain't no ordinary shopping trolley!!!! Looking forward to sticking it up against my mates Clio Williams!

trip computer

i find the computer in my punto sporting usually estimates a couple of more mpg than i get. Possibly i think it struggles to judge how much petrol the air con uses. Had a couple of bravo 1.8 hlx's before, the mark 1 bravo averaged 30 mpg in the winter and 36mpg in the summer while the mark 2 never went above 32mpg at anytime, maybe somewhat due to the latter having aircon.

35 mpg

My '98 HGT returns around 33-35mpg every tank on standard 95RON ULG. The fuel gauge is "erratic" so have to drive on the trip meter and refill at 350 miles. Best range on one tank was 380 miles (when the gauge used to work!). It has done 115000 miles (is this a record for an HGT?) so the engine is about as loose as it's ever going to be.

i think

its all down to driving styles - now my hgt is always
in the 18-22mpg.
However I did a long trip at the weekend and decided
not to go over 4000 rpm (was changing around the
3000 mark) , 70mpg on motorway the works.
Aircon ON (it was this weekend !)
I got 29.7 mpg in my 155 20v - now with aircon off
I reckon that could have been around the 33 mpg.
So in summary the only way to get above 25 mpg out
of a HGT or Marea 20v etc. is to drive like a total
bummer boy.
