I've had my 155HGT since new, its now nearly 3 years old. I was considering installing a pipercross induction kit but before I purchased one I thought I'd get the car on a rolling road for a performance test. Not thinking there was anything wrong I was somewhat pissed off to find that max power was only 145bhp@5800rpm, after that the power dropped off. I've since been to another garage and had a road dyno test done which I'm told is more accurate. This test, after 4 runs, basically came out with the same result 145bhp@5800rpm. I was told that there may not be anything wrong with the engine and that all performance figures quoted by fiat are approximate. With this in mind how best am I to approach my local fiat dealer. The car is still under warranty and I don't want to just be told that it is what it is. In my opinion 9bhp is lot to lose when you consider that an induction kit and exhaust might only give you 6bhp.

Have you got new filters, plugs etc...

They might cause a performance drop?

Usually, when a manufacturer puts out a new engine, the BHP is "claimed". Fiat actually "claim" 155 from the later HGT's.

Strabgely enough, the 1.6 16v is called a 1.6 "100" but the claimed bhp is 103. The 1.8 16v is a paltry 118bhp, but they call it a "115".

145bhp sounds reasonable enough for me and I doubt there's anything wrong with your engine.

On final point is, where is the bhp being claimed from - the crank, the cat or on the actual front wheels?

Anyone have any comments or guidance?

Re: Re: HGT driver needs help.

Here in Denmark a lot of people havce come with the same results in the 155 engines... Power doesnt turn out to be more than 142-145 HP... IN the other hand I have heard that the 147 turns out 150+ ...

Re: Re: HGT driver needs help.

The 1.6 and the 100 have different powers. The 100 was slightly less than 103.

155 will be the 'ideal' figure for the engine power when sitting on a dyno. Not when connected to a gearbox, sitting in a car and running on a rolling road.

The figure of 145 will have been estimated anyway. You will loose a good few BHP in the gearbox, wheels etc.. so they take the 'at the wheels' power and add a % to get the flywheel power. This % can vary widly between rollers. Depends on the place and if they mainly cater for sad little boy racer tosspots who love to wank over their power figures.

145 is quite good for a 3 year old. Certainly I'd be more concerned if they said it was 155. What was the torque figure?

Just a note, don't expect a new air filter to give you ANY more power, they just make a nice noise and contrary to what Roger Ramjet says don't increase fuel comsumption... they do only if you drive like a ****. :)

Re: Re: HGT driver needs help.

Thanks for the input everyone, the torque reading was 139lb/ft@5100rpm. Also just out of interest, anyone fitting a pipercross induction kit to an 155HGT? What do you do with the air conditioner intake pipe?

Re: Re: Re: HGT driver needs help.

I guess the car is in fine condition since it has 188 Nm of torque...quite good :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT driver needs help.

Dont know...but i am fitting one to my 155 HGT in a couple of days, i'll let you know.
