HGT bleeding sequence?

Finally got around to ordering a new thermostat and thought I'd give it a go myself. I'm just a bit concerned about getting the bleeding sequence right as the last thing I want is a blown gasket.
So, anyone know the routine? Pics and tools required and fill quantities (he-he, he said Tittys) would be great.

Take off the plastic intake from the radiator. On top of the radiator there are 2 screws, unscrew one by one from left to right and keep them open, when water starts to come out, close the one you have open and go to the next.
If you have aircon with Climate control, you dont have the 3d screw, but to be sure check the two pipes that are coming from the car interior to the thermostat. If there is a screw do the same on it, after the frist 2.

Then start the car, turn the heating knob to HI and bring the engine to the point where the fan kicks in. To do so every min or so get the rpms to ca. 3500 - 4000 rpm.
During that time keep the expansion reservoir open. After the fan kicks in, turn the engine off, add coolant if needed and your done.

Be careful that the coolant level dont get under the MIN mark.

Thanks Sven. Couple of questions: -
When you say "Take off the plastic intake from the radiator" which part are we talking about?
When you say "unscrew one by one from left to right" is this facing the car or from behind the wheel?

He means the expansion tank cap.

Ahhhh. I thought for a minute he meant the air intake (as it's above the radiator).

You could do but the highest point is the expansion tank cap. You will need to remove the lower radiator pipe to drain it out.

Heres my 2p.

The coolant renewal is pretty straight forward.

Make sure the air is not on recirculate. Undo the coolant expansion tank cap, make sure the engine is not hot otherwise hot steam will spray out of the expansion tank. Open all the bleed screws some on the radiator itself, some on the pipes radiator pipes going to the bulk head. On a 1.8 you'll have an undertray, i.d drop the front down so i'd get access to the lower pipe on the radiator then i'd undo the pipe carefully and then get a bucket and pull the hose off completely and let the coolant run into the bucket.

You could flush it out or not your choice, then to refill, reattach the lower hose securely. Refit engine splash guard. Then starting at the lowest point bleed screws start to refill the coolant, squeeze the lower and upper radiator hoses to help expel trapped air, once coolant starts to bubble out, close the bleed screw. Then Do the next for the same and so. Until all bleed screws are securely tightened.

Continue to Fill to MAX. Then refit the expansion cap loosely. Start the engine and run it at idle. Since your car has air con get a friend to help and get them to raise the revs to 3000rpms every 30secs while the engine is warming up. When this is done carefull open the bleed screw on the heater hose, bearing in mind the dangers of hot coolant and bleed out any trapped air.

Add more coolant so its at MAX, but only for the first few mins after the engine has started otherwise the coolant will get hot.

Once the coolant level has stabilised you can now tighten the expansion tank cap securely.

Let the engine warm up until normal operating temp, let it run for a few mins then switch it off and allow to cool.

Check for leaks around the hoses and items you've messed with and check the coolant level, top up if necessary. Remember to check coolant only when its cold for an accurate measure.

Opps, yeah you do because thats where one of the bleed screws are.

Regarding the left to right i assume he means from the lowest point as water fills up and dribbles out close the screw and carry on till the next one starts to dribble.

Oz, you have to take off the plastic intake part that is just above the radiator to get to the 2 screws that Im talking about. Then in that same position you have to unscrew one by one from left to right, you will have 2 of them if you have air con.
