Ok so my uno 1.0 start blew up tonight :(

not really sure whats up tho... had fine running then accelerated out of a bend (foot not even flat) then it started making weird noises and i felt like it was running on 2 cylinders :(

got to my destination slowly, then poked around under the bonnet, oil recently was topped up, plug leads all connected... everythin looks fine.

have to drive it home... car is going slower and slower until the point where i can't go above 2nd gear and i can't more than feather the throttle... at the same time i'm leaving clouds of white smoke/steam out the back
Although the temp gauge hasn't risen above 90 ... so what the hell is up with it????
my mate has suggested possibly coil pack, i thought it could be the Head gasket, but surely it would have got much hotter than 90?

anyone got any ideas? will check the oil for scum in the morning but for now i'm stumped :(

alex, do you want to borrow a car for the til monday so you can get about?

also, did you here of a red cinq having an accident on the road towards haslemere? my dad saw it and phoned me up worried it was you

May be short circuit in the distributor cap. Makes it ignite an uncompressed mixture in the wrong cylinder, which again works against other cylinders. Try getting an old cap from a friend (or maybe you have an old worn spare) to verify.

that'd make sense as there wa sa mad clicking sound when i floored it and there was literally no power :(

Pete mate cheers but sorting out the insurance would be a mission and not really worth the effort.
and no it wasn't me, enzo still dead (n)

Bad luck Alex22...
Sounds like a blown head gasket to me (steaming), perhaps it has failed also between two cylinders to account for the weird noises. This wouldn't necessarily cause overheating in my opinion, particularly given your low ambient temperatures. And, once the coolant level drops below the level of the gauge sender, it's anyone's guess.

Maybe do a compression test if you can get hold of a compression tester (not sure how easy it will be to reach all four plug holes, might have to remove some of the induction system first). Or do my style of compression test - listen to the engine when cranking over - does it sound even or does it make a stirring noise...

Has the coolant level dropped?

Remove one HT lead from the plug. Then start her up and let her idle at 3 cylinders. If this suddenly works out at a particular (or two) cylinders, the gasket might have blown (as Alex says) between this cylinder and the next. The gasket went on mine between cylinder 2 and 3, which made her idle rough with 4 HT leads in, bit idled smooth with 3 HT leads in, with either HT lead 2 or 3 removed. Do a compression test (also as Alesx says). In my case, I got 12 and for cylinder 1 and 4, and around 7 at cylinder 2 and 3. Which meant the gasket had blown between 2 and 3. Also this cool white smoke blended with an excessive oil-use (blue smoke) was pretty hilarious. This caused the same symptoms as I mentioned about the distributor cap, as it ignited through the gasket hole, crossover the cylinders at the wrong time.

Right it won't even start now :p
fairly sure its headgasket though as i put in fresh oil the day before and its now white :(
so i'ma drain the oil and do the change over the weekend...
As the temp didn't sky-rocket do you think head skim will be nessecary
