Hello, I need some assistance in fault finding. Ive been getting a clunking noise when going over bumps. I replaced the lower arm and strut as I first thought strut top bearing. Now under the car I can clearly see the inner CV joint is wet. Also the cup in which the CV slots. There are 4 bolts holding the cup in with the looks and they are wet.
The CV boot does not look damaged but the grease inside is very thin (I checked).

My questions are, do you think it's a seal between the gearbox and CV cup? If so what is the seal called and where do I get one?

Also of it is that would that be causing the clunk or is my CV joint damaged from it too?

Thanks in advance.

There isn't really any play in the CV joint. I will definitely check the gearbox oil but I have already replaced the strut and lower arm with all new bushings trying to solve the clunk. I guess I will get the crowbar back out and see if the anti roll bar or drop link could be the cause.

There are two seals on the shaft output: one lip type and one O-ring, the last one can easily get pinched @ re-assembly. There is no communication between the CV boot and the gear-box so oil can't get mixed with the grease...

Check the gearbox oil level with a degree of urgency.

Looks like you have a leak from drive shaft oil seal, so if it is means you may have a bone dry gearbox CHECK URGENTLY!!!

Oil seals are around £10 and labour should be about £50 - £100 for both sides (check other side also for leaks) at an independant, local garage unless you can do yourself. Is not a big job.

Plus you will need new transmission fluid (75w -80) fully synth to API GL-4 the spec shows amount as 1.5kgs
