Help - temperamental ABS

I have a strange problem with my ABS, on some occasions it seems to work fine but on others the ABS will work when its not supposed to (when braking very gently.) shortly after this happens the warning light will appear on the dash, it stays for a while and eventually switches off. Any ideas if it could be somthing simply that i could check? or would it be a diagnostic job?
