Technical Help please after wishbone change?

I have finally managed to change both front Wishbones and while doing so replaced the Anti Roll Bar Bushes, but during the test drive have found a new knock? After rechecking i have found that on the N/S/F the gap between the A/R/BAR and the Alloy Wishbone bracket is about 10mm yet on the O/S/F the gap is 2mm if that! So ok found the noise and after checking the driveway found a 10mm washer/spacer. But, is this correct should you have only one spacer and if so should it be on the front or back of the O/S/F A/R/Bracket? confused! Advice please.

When you split the Antiroll Bar brackets and removed them from the car did you bevel the edges of the locating lugs in order for the two parts to come together inline? A judicious tapping with a small hammer usually locates the two halves of the bracket a you gradually tighten.

If not, it maybe that they have not located and are held apart by the locating lug not being in place.

The screws that hold the brackets to the sub-frame all have a washer.

After reading your message again I feel we are talking about different items - The ARB is not anywhere in close proximity to the wishbone. It would seem to me that what you are calling the ARB is in fact the sub-frame and the alloy bracket you mention would be the front bush retainer on the wishbone. If this is the case there should be no gap between the front bush holder/retainer and the sub-frame. Have you mistakely placed the washers between the alloy bush holder and the subframe. If at all possible undo all the screws and check.

Have a look at the ePer that JTDman has posted and familiarise yourself with the bits & pieces. Some of the names are different i.e. Wishbone=swinging arm & ARB=torsion bar but if in doubt you can always ask, we weren't born with the info we have all had to learn.

Hi Peat,

Yeah i did remove the edges of the locating lugs and i also followed the instructions posted by Nick on how to do change the wiahbone, also i removed and cleaned all the bolts as instructed and none of the washers were removed. i have also measured the thickness of the aluminium brackets on the new and old wishbones and they are the same.
The problem is on the front offside where the anti roll bar goes across the car and connects to the staberliser link bar, the anti roll bar crosses over the rear of the wishbone bracket (nearest the driving seat) the gap is so tight the roll bar is nocking the bracket when going over bumps! i could remove the anti roll bar bracker put the washer/spacer i have found which i think will equal the gap to match the nearside but surley this cannot be a Fiat method? If i am still not making the fault clear i will post a picture of both sides if this will help.

OK now I think I'm with you. ARB requires to be centred

Were the two rings/clamps that stop the ARB from moving side to side in the correct position? They are there to stop exactly the problem you are having.

It seems to me that the one on the drivers side has moved slightly outward and requires to be tapped toward the centre of the car, allowing the ARB to move to the offside. If this is the case the nearside clamp will need to be tapped toward the n/s. Loosening the clamps will help you to achieve this.

If I'm incorrect in my assumption I will need photos to help you further.

Thank you Peat,

I will give that a try and get back to you, if i am still having problems after that i will post a photo!
Just a thought is there a mark on the bar or a measurement i should use, or is it by eye using the position of the link arms?

None that I know of, it's just a case of moving the bar a little and seeing if it's an equal length on both sides.

Job done, no more driving a bouncy castle, did not realise how bad it was untill it was done, when going over speed bumps i can hear the hiss of the shocks, never heard that before!

A big thank you to Peat .for answering my posts, centered the bar as you suggested and all ok, and on closer inspection of old A/R/B Bushes found the imprint of the washer i found! poss old owner attempt at stopping noise.:yuck:
