I have just replaced my starter motor on my Ducati 1999 2.8. I had 2 incorrect ones supplied which both burnt out as too small. Now I have correct model but I have a permanent live to starter motor. As soon as battery connected it works even with keys in my pocket-help pls.

there is a permanent live to the starter and a switched live to start it, have you not got the two wires mixed up? i know this as i had to strip a fiat engine down a couple days ago it runs with the live from the back of the alternator, this is on a marea not a diesel van but will be the same.

If the two wires were transposed would that then lead to the starter solenoid being energised but no power at the main contacts because the key had not been turned, it was still in his pocket?

SO when the battery is connected back up the starter works. so theres 12V at the solenoid & 12v at switch as well or an internal fault with the starter motor cause it to energize without a key
