My MkII HGT's engine has started sounding a little strange, there appears to be a scraping sound whilst driving and stationary. It seems to be coming from the bottom left hand corner, a friend of work said that one of the tensioners could be loose or that one of the bearings has gone, has anyone heard of or had the same problem? It still drives fine (got up to 120 this morning on the way to work) however it just sounds like a old knackered car.

no idea what it could be as im not too technical, but if they have suggested tensioner or bearing dont drive it.

how old is it, and how many miles on the clock?

has it had the cambelt replaced along with the tensioners?

if it is a tensioner for the cambelt then the end result could mean either an engine rebuild or a new engine, either of which will not be cheap by any stretch of the imagination

Is that drivers side or passenger side?

It's on the driver's side. T-Reg (1999) with 82,000 the previous owner had the cambelt (don't know about tensioners) changed at 72,000.

Please don't talk about engine rebuilds as I've just had that done on my 1.4 as the guy before didn't have the cambelt changed and I was stupid enough to buy and drive it without having it changed.

I'm now beginning to doubt if my HGT has really had it changed or not, I'll call the garage that supposedly serviced and replaced the cambelt just to check that they have and will just drive my 1.4 for the time being :(

Forgot to mention that its only really started making this odd noise after I clashed with the kerb the other week, had it repaired and it needed a new driveshaft & wishbone!

Could as easily be the alternator bearings are on their way as it's down that side too. If you've not had a new alt on it yet it may be that. I'd get this checked out much sooner rather than later IIWY.

I've had the same fault.

Mine was the aux belt tensioner. The metal 1. Its about £70 quid from fiat.

Mine also on a 99 T and has done 80K

Thanks :)

Thanks for your help and replies, will book it into a garage asap and will have to use my 1.4 for the time being. If I ever get a fully functioning Bravo I will join Boo and will post some pics, if not I may have to look at a different car all together :(

Mine was the same as Stu R.

1998 R reg Marea 20v, 98,000 miles.

Joe.

You Never get a fully fuctional Bravo/a.

Just think of every problem as a learning curve or a chance of improving.

Very True

So basically Bravo's are like women and pc's!!! (Sorry if I've offended any ladies on here)

Dont think I'll be getting rid of my Bravo for quite some time yet, guess it needs some TLC :)

Thanks for the help before guys, I had the aux belt tensioner changed which has made the engine sound a lot better however I now get a really bad ticking noise. If I rev the engine it increases with speed, anyone have any suggestions please?

Let me join in on the conversation. My '99 HGT makes a rattling noise when the engine is under pressure (increases with higher revs) and it comes from the right-hand (passanger's) side. Cambelt, tensioners and three outside bearings have been changed. What could it be?

I've had a couple of bearings/tensioners go on my 99 hgt. I reckon a lifespan of 50-60K aint bad so I don't mind having em replaced since i then have the re-assurance that I've new parts on (I'm always thankful when a part wears out - that it dosn't bugger up something else too).

Having bought a car more than a couple of years old, and saved well over 10K on what it would have cost a mere 4yrs earlier, I'm actaully glad when I have to replace parts as I know my mule will be running sweeter after :) when mine started making a noise it got a lot worse ten miles later. I called out AA and they listened to them with a stethoscope to determine which were wearing. I forgot to ask when I had the last one done, but the AA guy mentioned that there are some smaller (forget what he called em) fixed rollers which also were sounding rough. would suggest you look into what these parts are as well for when you get your tensioners changed (nothing can be expected to last forever) ;)

just read later post mentioning you have changed your tensioner - one of them anyway.

Other culprits for this ticking could be clogged butterfly valve or throttle body in need of clean out.
