Have a brava 1.4 12v sx.
The problem is it was parked for about 4yrs and now after having a gear problem fixed today, I started the car and it cut out after running for a short while, while I was rev ving the engine. I heard something breaking and decided not to restart right away.
I removed the panel that covered the timming belt (to see if the timming belt was the problem) and the damage was revealed.
It was not the timming belt

What is it that was damage and where can I get it from?
Can the car drive like this with the other bits and peices removed or must the part have to be replace first?
Should I at least start the car or should I wait until the part is replaced?

Dont start/drive it whatever you do. I am not sure if the 1,4 12v is a safe engine but I wouldnt want to try(thats if there has not been any internal damage already). The plastic toothed part has come away from the pully, probably went brittle from standing around so long and just gave up. I would have thought a new pully should be easy to get and not too expensive.

if you are lucky the timing belt will not have slipped on the cam or crank pulleys. however you must replace the damaged pulley before you start the engine. in cases like this you usually expect to find a seized bearing on the damaged pulley. however in this case i guess 4 years without use could have made the plastic go brittle.

well i was starting the car sometimes to let the engine run and drove it a little, not to far but lately i have not started it in about a month.
