Hi, I'm at my wits end with my parent in laws 2000 Brava. Its a 1.2 16V and the cooling fan will not activate. I have replaced the fan as the old one had seized. It did'nt work so I checked the Fuse in the engine bay and it is fine. I have replaced the thermostat. So far no luck. There are no other wires coming from the radiator except for the one to the fan. I presumed there might be a sensor or something from the radiator to kick things off.

Has anyone any ideas? Is there any more fuses, relays or sensors, if so where would they be. Your my last hope!

Thanks

I have a 1.4 so have no direct knowledge of 1.2's, but this is what I think you need to check.

Sounds to me like you need to replace the thermostatic switch which is mounted on your radiator - this is the switch that the wires from the fan motor run to on the radiator (mind you, you say you have replaced the thermostat....did you mean the thermostatic switch?, I ask because you wouldn't normally replace the thermostat unless the engine was either constantly too hot or too cold. Replacing the thermostat wouldn't solve your problem as you have described it).

The thermostatic switch turns the fan on when the coolant reaches approx 105 degrees...the thermostat starts opening at approx 81 degrees centigrade.

A multimeter is good for jobs like this, then you can find out were electricity is getting too and were not, they're a cheap tool, you don't need a fancy one.....

Hi, Where on the radiator would the switch be? I have looked and can't find one. Is it under the radiator?

Thanks Steven

I don't know if the 1.2s have a thermo switch, cos 1.6 later models don't... the fan is controlled by the ECU.
Have you checked the relay for the fan? you can find it right in front of the Battery. Try cleaning it... Hope this helps.
