Hey everyone,

This is my first time posting but I've been taking a lot of advice from you guys over the past few months...I wanted to begin by saying Thanks!

I'm having a big problem with my 1968 500L. I just put a new 126 engine in but the car is not starting up consistantly. By this I mean that often, on first pull, the car will start. If I shut it off after a 5 minute drive and then attempt to turn it on again, it won't turn on for a while. At first I thought the engine was flooding...however, I now think that it is the starter. More specifically, I dont think the gears on the starter are catching...thus causing the car to turn on only sometimes while failing to turn on other times. What do you think? Any thoughts will help

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum !

When you say the starter gears arent catching - can you hear the starter motor still spinning and not engaging or does it do nothing ?

Hey,

AlfaTwo: I tried staring it manually but I'm having the same problem which leads me to...

Pandavan: I hear the starter turning but it isnt engaging. sounds like it just keeps spinning but the engine often doesnt turn on...there will also be the occasion when it sounds as if it is going to turn on and then dies out again (it isnt the battery as i just put it in).

What do you guys think? Thanks for the quick responses by the way!

Sounds like a pooped starter motor:(

From what youre saying it sounds like the starter gear isnt engaging

These places sell them:

Or these seem cheaper and they sell the bits to rebuild the motor - might be worth explaining to them whats wrong with yours they might be able to sell you the bits to repair rather than the expense of a new whole unit(y)
