Bought my car (2002 52 Stilo 1.8 Dynamic) bought it with a diesely sound and knew it needed Variator.

It was at 69k. Thus service light. Its the timing belt interval one.

I searched for a local Fiat garage to do the variator and timing.

Got a good price for a "Fiat & Alfa Specialist" no names mentioned.

Anyway. Got it done, Started it up to drive away and it took longer than usual to start and then stalled straight away.thought nothing off it. Started again and seemed ok.

Drove into town, parked up. Came back few hours later, same problem, struggling to start.

Drove it for a week, Got worse, running lumpy, lack of power, seemed to be idleing funny too.

Took it to the garage and they drove it and it stalled. They diagnosed it with a crankshaft sensor. I thought ok, fair enough.

Stayed in with them over the weekend and got it fitted on Sat. Closed sun.

Monday get a call saying they fitted it, drove it and the engine died and would be barly run.

Stayed with them.

It not throwing any codes only air con and something to do with the key.

Anyway, they have been "trying" to get a "tool" to check the timing. This has been 2 weeks, YES, 2 weeks of no car and nothing happening.

They have tried fiat main dealer, they dont have it. Fiat italy dont have it.

Please can someone offer some assistance?!?!

http://www.toolsinstock.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=273289 that's the tools needed to change the cam belt. IIRC i had a similar experience with a punto 1.8 hgt where it stalled run poorly etc and traced it back to the phase sensor for the camshaft faulty or had been slightly damaged when the cam pulley was taken off to change the variator. It might mean the the cam pulley and sensor being changed, which means the cam belt coming off again.

What on earth has this garage been ******* about at then.

Thats the tool, buy it and check the timing.

If its not timing, fix it!

You can try a garage on Perth Street West, it's a small one but thats where i had my 2.4 engine rebuilt, they also had some problems finding timing tool but they've set it right (i've done 16000 miles since)
I'm not sure if they will touch another stilo again tho.

All sorted now.

Timing was out by 2mm.

They said they'd also not like to work on another Stilo lol.

Im just glad its fixed and can get back to enjoying it
