Technical HELP! I have no idea what speed I am doing!

Hello,

I would appreciate anyones help.

I have a 1990 Mk2 Fiat Uno 903cc 'Formula '90'.
A few days ago I removed my speedo dash to clean some dust- I have recently bought the car, and once screwing it back in the speedo doesn't work. Everything else is fine.

I have a working knowledge of cars but am no expert and certainly have not got a clue when it comes to electrics. I have the Haynes Manual and have considered removing the whole dash to have a look to see if a wire has come lose but would appreciate any suggestions and things I should be weary of before removing it.

The usual one is that the speedo cable didnt connect properly into the clockpack and when you refitted it poped off, they are a tight fit, and fiddly to connect, id have a look see!!! Ant!

The speedo is a purely mechanical device, so it wont be an electrical problem. Just make sure its connected properly on the back of the instruments.

That's interesting. I have been too 'scared' to take off the dash completely and examine the wires.
Before you replied I have pulled the speedometer unit forward again and pushed the wires in all the way. I wish do this again one more time but this time I will take pictures also to show you what I mean.

Where does the wire connect to?

The speedo doesnt have a wire, its got a big fat cable with a big white connector on it, it pushes straight onto the back of the instrument cluster.

The cable comes dirrectly from a gear in the gearbox, it connects to the gearbox at the top/back.

The big clip has a piece that slides backwards, pull it backwards, push the cable onto the fitting on the back ont the instruments, then slide the piece forwards again to lock it.

This cable often comes off when people move the instrument cluster.

i'm not sure on these cars, but i know on some cinqs it was a 2 piece cable which joined in the middle, was quite a common problem for it to break here. But the face that you have recently had the dash off makes the instrument end suspect. Might be worth a check though, could have disturbed the joint if it is a 2 piece cable.

It's just a one-piece cable on the Unos, but I've still had one fail on me in the past due to snagging part-way along, seemingly unprovoked!

Chances are though it's just not connected back properly, if this has happened directly after fiddling with the cables. It needs to be firmly pressed onto the back of the clocks unit. Did you get it sorted uno_uno?
