Technical Help! engine knocking noises

Bought my Bravo 4 months ago with 1 prev owner and 35k on the clock. Had immediate problems with non-working fuel gauge and cut-out problems. Both paid for by dealer after 'discussion'

Now it's developed a horrible tapping sound from the engine. It sounded like a 2CV when I started up on Friday. This seems to have started quite suddenly. Drove home (6 miles) and the sound seemed to get louder and deeper (this could have been psychological - brought on by my increasing anxiety)

Anyway it's there when idling and gets louder when revved. Had a quick listen this morning and seems to be coming from head (as some will have already sussed I know skidaddle about cars)

I was too worried to leave it running for long
Oil clean and at right level

Does this ring any bells?

was the engine running "normally" as in normal levels of power because if it sounds that rough all of a sudden it could be running on 3 cylinders which could be as simple as a loose HT(spark plug)lead but if you could describe the symtoms in respect to the engines performance.it could be a fuel injector you are hearing as they can make a loud regular tapping sound.you can try putting a screwdriver on different parts of the head and putting your ear to the screwdriver handle(i know it sounds daft!)but it helps localise where a noise is coming from.sorry i cant help in more detail but i hope this helps till someone with brains answers:I

Well it did seem to perform normally although I have to say I held back a bit out of nervousness. I have only fired it up very briefly since as I am concerned about doing more damage

well if it was on 3 cyl, you would have noticed.it could be one of these things you need to hunt around for.i would check all connections etc as a mechanic could have leaned on something and loosened it also try(with the engine off!)rocking the engine to see if you can hear a noise it could be a busted engine/gearbox mount.im just trying to think of things outwith engine probs to give you stuff to eliminateB)

oh just had a thought its not your exhaust thats got a leak?that would account for a noise at the head at the manifold(where it joins the engine)it could be "blowing" there and that could account for the noise your hearing[8)]
