heaters blowing cold air only but temp gauge goes upto max then drops back to half way when driving.but as soon as i stop in traffic the gauge goes backup to the red again and it is still freezing in the car.Any ideas of what the problem is?

Yup...sounds likely that you head gasket has gone, what car do you have?
