hello, with a mk2 punto 1.2 8v problem

hi guys and gals.
just put a new engine in my 1.2 8v mk2 punto, cant get it to start yet but would appreciate some help, its got the key code light on and it wont start, everything else seems ok but its just getting to me that it wont fire up.
i did get it to fire once with easy start but thats about it. the key code light sometimes goes off but then comes back on. the car had been stood for 6 months with a flat battery. then we put the new engine in using the original ecu and everything else.

any suggestions as to the fault would be really helpful.
this is a project for my son.

HI dave, do you think this will need recoded at all?
i was hoping to get away with not having to transport it 40 miles to the nearest fiat dealer.
i have checked all the earth wires and all seem good and tight .
