Hi guys,

Just thought I'd join as I'm back driving my Fiat Punto mk2 again and want to make the most of it!

It's a blue 2004 1.2 Active Sport. It came with a modified exhaust, not really my thing, but I've kept it on there as it's just a bit of fun I guess! I do notice that there are some slight fumes from time to time inside the car, and I guess it might be to do with the exhaust?

Anyway, bought it earlier in the year, then I went to Australia for 7 months, came back to find that no one had driven it around the block every so often for me like they said they would, so it resulted in a full set of seized brakes all over the car! Took it for MOT, failed of course due to brakes, also needed a new suspension arm and wheel alignment. Had a parents' friend sort it after we bought all the parts, took it for MOT again, failed AGAIN! They said the handbrake didn't work at all (it actually did, just too many clicks to pull up), and they said that the back brakes weren't working at all despite new shoes and cylinders. So it could be the adjuster, taking it back to my parents' friend to sort today. Fingers crossed!

The poor car has been a bit of an unlucky car. It previously had 9 owners (!!!) and I tried to sell it for about 2 months before I left to Australia, constantly reducing the price, but it failed to sell at all. ONE person looked at it and said no. It's a curse on me right now! But if I'm living with it, then I want to make the most of it!

So that's my story for now :)

Cheers!

looks tidy tho

Been stood - it should have be wheel chocked and handbrake left off
Maybe in gear too incase a chav nicks the bricks

Anyway - a smell of fumes in the cabin is a bad sign, check exhaust for leaks

The rear adjusters are buggers for sticking, a complete strip down - deep clean and abrade is the way forward

Sometimes you have to make the shoes adjust by a screwdriver trick to make them work again

What's this screwdriver trick that you speak of?

One of 2 things

either you use a screwdrivers to release the self adjusters to Zero - with the handbrake cable to slackest positiom, then refit the drum and press the brake pedal a few times to make them readjust

if they have been sat seized at a certain point, the teeth may be impossible for it to adjust, so again either force an adjustment or slacken it to move along 1 or 2 teeth

Make sure that they are both balanced, last thing you want is a Heavy sided drum as that will cause havock when braking hard in the wet

you cant get a simpler setup than on a drummed punto whether it has the vauxhall type abs adjusters or the old pre roman invasion click and go adjusters
basically if you cant get a decent pedal/handbrake you are doing something wrong
i often here advise you boys to take photos pre strip down with your fancy phones if you aint got a brownie box
remember we are talking life saving bits of material hitting coild steel to stop you in evereyday driving
read a book to familiarise yourself if you dont know what you are doing or pay someone who can
as pointed out the other day rear brakes only need to be 16% efficient to pass an mot so its hardly rocket science to get the shoes to hit the drum and hold the car on an incline on the handbrake

rant over
