hello all

Hello malawiboy and welcome. My wife and I, newly married back in those days, had a stop over in Malawi for a day back in 1965. We were on our way to visit friends who had recently emigrated to the then Rhodesia (now, of course, Zimbabwe) but Ian Smith declared unilateral independence so our plane landed in Malawi and we eventually got a flight, on an old DC3 Dakota, into the country. Our friends lived in Bulawayo and we had a grand time going round the game reserves etc. Sadly for us, but even more tragically so for the local people, there was a serious incident at Beitbridge and the police/military stopped us from traveling around. We did manage to get on an escorted convoy to see Victoria Falls - we stood in the rainforest and watched, with awe, the water cascading over but we weren't allowed to stay for long as we had to return with the convoy going back. I have kind and spectacular memories of the country but tinged with sorrow for some of the sights we saw. Also sadly, our friends split up soon after and both returned, separately, to the UK so we've never had an excuse to think of returning - too old now for long haul. All best wishes to you. Jock
